Hebrews 2:1-3a Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation ...

ADVENT ACTIONS: PLANNING PERSONAL PRIORITIES

In this part of the country it seems like snow is lurking just around the corner! At any moment, it seems we could easily get a nice thick layer of that white freshness. I have to admit I'm rather looking forward to it. I enjoy the beauty of snow. The way it looks clean and seems to make the air lively and crisp.

However, I forget that this beauty of snow also comes with difficult shoveling, slippery sidewalks, salt on the roads, and rust on cars. Here at our church and at our home we have prepared by winterizing the buildings. We continue to prepare by getting out the shovels and salt and all the warm clothes. Those who don't prioritize for the coming winter find themselves unprepared.

We can see winter coming, just like we can see the Advent or first coming of Christ. The writer to the Hebrews reminds us that the angels message "proved steadfast" and true. Jesus Christ came. He was born in Bethlehem just as was promised and the angels announced Him by singing God's praises to the shepherds in the fields. Jesus came, so that our "transgression and disobedience" against God would be paid. It is the certainty of our Savior's first coming and His completed work of salvation that gives us all the more reason to "give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard," so that we too are prepared for when He comes again!

What are my priorities? Much like the approaching icy cold winter, "How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?" Rejoice in Christ's Advent actions! Give thanks in the hearing of God's promises fulfilled in His Son Jesus Christ. Pray for the Lord's wisdom and guidance to help plan personal priorities, "lest we drift away."
