Dear Music Friends,
Just as robust as Spring are our well-wishes for you! Warren and I are blissed with Spring speaking ardently in our song. We're so inspired by it; we strive for its brilliant fruition in our live shows and in the creation of fresh, new works.
We just jetted back from the US having done a series of concerts in both new and revolving venues. Our Laroo/Byrd Funky4 outfit has a ball jamming The Flying Monkey Grill & Bar, from where we do our best to stream via Facebook Live, letting you witness our creative universe in progress, inventing, exploring, sharing the keen impact that only the live music experience can confer.
A few of our highlights:
- Royal Jazz: Super happy that we're back at the Royal Jazz Festival on April 27 @ De Bullekerk, Zaandam, NL with my Saskia Laroo Band! This time we're with Boy Edgar award winner for 2022 Ronald Snijders on flute as featured guest, all elicited by the band's successful performance of last year on this festival held annually on Koningsdag (Dutch King's Day), then featuring celebrated Dutch saxophonist Benjamin Herman.
- Article in Elsevier Magazine: I hereby proudly present a direct link (in Dutch) to the previously announced extensive interview of myself in Elsevier Magazine, a major Dutch weekly. Conducted by journalist Ron Kosterman at Studio Clous van Mechelen in Amsterdam, Warren and I had just recorded some new music videos with me on bass prior to the interview. (read in English)
- New music video: In fact, the week after the interview we were back in Clous's studio to record more music videos, this time with me on trumpet. We wait eagerly for these videos to be released. However, here you can see the first song from that session, “Recordame”, a Joe Henderson composition with lyrics by Warren Byrd.
We are pleased that opportunities to play our music live are spawning. This year we've already enjoyed some stellar performances at both new and renown stages (see below "Throwbacks"). Personal recommendations of us by our music friends and fans determine greatly where we play. Tips and ideas via email, whatsapp for favorite and special small and large stages and festivals are welcome--see contact info below.

All Corona restrictions seem to dissapade. However, we do realize that some of our warier fans are still not attending public spaces. We try to post as much as possible on our social media, follow us there for news and updates, a.o. on the progress of our hard work on our new music.
And don't forget, whatever happens, keep swinging!
Your music friends, Saskia Laroo & Warren Byrd

Special mention: We feel blissed to have spent quality moments with legendary US-based trumpeter, bandleader, composer, arranger, and educator Charles Tolliver, now 81 but a veritable Fountain of Youth! A progenitor of New York's post-bop jazz scene beginning some 60+ years back, Stanley Cowell and he would establish their own record label, Strata-East in 1970. His latest release was in 2020 and he is currently working on his next. Brought to the Netherlands for the first of many visits several decades ago by Hans Dulfer to perform in Paradiso, Amsterdam, NL, Mr. Tolliver will man a stage at this year's North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, NL on July 8, 2023, with his recreation of John Coltrane's Africa Brass. He looms brightly to us as an exemplar of dynamic longevity in a life of music. |
