We start the New Year with a visit by Jerry Webb from Brighton. Jerry is self-taught and often at odds with conventional perceptions, interpreting what he sees using his own individual methods and distinctive style. His photographs include people, portrait, event, street and project photography and he has been published many times. He has had exhibitions in Sussex and London, including a large exhibition last Summer in Brick Lane.
Jerry will be showing some commissioned work but largely self-initiated projects, taken in towns and cities across the UK and France, shot in both monochrome and colour.

DI Group - Monday 9 January |
Wishing you all a Very Happy New Year 2023 and hope it will bring you peace and joy.
It seems like only a few days ago that we had our last DI meeting in December. It is always a busy month especially as Christmas looms. As usual there were wonderful presentations last month starting with Barry Mead. He showed a few of his images, some new, all with their iconic style which is immediately recognisable as Barry’s. Whether the images look realistic or fictional a lot of thought and attention to detail goes into them to make them successful. His creative work is well known and he has not slowed down. Since the meeting he has produced new work, a couple of which are shown here.

Steve Field, energised by recently gaining the distinction AWPF and a brand new PC, showed a variety of images of sports, studio, nature and also creative style as in Bob Faris’s architectural paper sculptures. Bob’s influence carries on in Anita Fullerton’s images. She also showed her table top images with a creative touch. Mike Martin, always experimenting, presented ultra macro images and movement of water in mono. It was good to see David Alderson’s images of warm Greek islands as winter begins to bite here.
All BPS members are welcome to join in the next DI meeting especially if you have images to share. I hope you have had opportunities to take photos over the holidays, be it here or away or just being creative with your archive. As it happens the closing date for the next BPS competition (PDI) round 3 is a couple of days later and you may want to get an opinion on your images or just show off what you have been working on. You are welcome to join in if you just want to see the proceedings or ask questions on digital imaging.
I look forward to receiving your images for presentation at the DI meeting. Please send me your images to reach me by 6pm-ish on Sunday 8th January. Images: JPG format, sRGB colour space, 1600 x 1200 pixels (same as competitions but not strict). If you wish to show them in a specific order, please prefix filenames with 01, 02, 03 etc. Email attachment size - max 20Mb per email, as many as necessary. You may also use WeTransfer or Dropbox if convenient, but I am not equipped to receive by direct transfers from Google or Apple Mac systems.

FIAP
Distinction applications in 2023
|
This
information is important to all those who may be considering applying for
FIAP Distinctions in 2023. As many of you will be aware, a new set of FIAP Distinctions regulations was sent out in January 2021. The regulations set out the requirements for each
Distinction level. The new regulations were to have come into force as of
January 2022 but were subsequently deferred as they needed to be approved by
the delegates from member nations at the FIAP Congress which was to take
place in 2021. The pandemic has disrupted the normal timetable significantly.
|
This
Congress took place on the 2/3 December. During the Congress the
item in relation to changes to the FIAP Distinctions was discussed and the
following was agreed:
|
- The revised distinctions have now been completely cancelled. They will not be introduced.
- As a response to the COVID pandemic and the resulting lockdown worldwide FIAP had introduced a reduction in the fees for all FIAP Distinctions and for the Life Card. This was due to last until June 2023. This has now been extended to the end of 2023.
- FIAP had also introduced a waiver on the requirement for print acceptances which photographers applying for AFIAP and EFIAP had to meet. This was in place until the end of 2022 – it has now been extended to the end of 2023. So, anyone applying for AFIAP and EFIAP in this season will not have to show print acceptances.
Further
information on the current requirements is available from the FIAP Liaison Officer
for the PAGB, details below:

Below is the latest report from Mike Martin, our External Competitions Secretary:
Competitions Round-Up
The period around Christmas is one of the busiest times of the year for external competitions, so here’s a quick roundup, in no particular order. MASTERS OF PRINT 2022
Unfortunately, most of us have not had images selected for inclusion within the Masters of Print exhibition. As some of you may have seen in the recent PAGB eNews* BPS blew the competition out of the water regaining the title with a phenomenal 169 points, ahead of Catchlight, languishing in second with 118 points! We had 27 members submitting a total of 124 images, from which 10 scored 13 or higher, being shortlisted for inclusion. The judges look at the shortlisted entries and then make their selection ensuring a mix of Nature / Mono / Colour and a range of subjects to avoid too much repetition and ensure only one image per person within the final 60 images. Unfortunately, 7 of our shortlisted images didn’t quite make the exhibition. * This issue of PAGB eNews also gives details of the British entry in the FIAP Nature Biennial – whilst not a ‘club’ entry, two of our members (Graham and Mary Pears) both had entries in the UK selection gaining 4th place [FIAP Bronze medal] so huge congratulations to both of them.
However, please join me in congratulating the following three members for having images selected:
Derwood Pamphilon - Big Red Dress
Sue O’Connell - Waterscape with Snail Kites
Jay Hallsworth - The Girl in the Shawl
BEST COLOUR PRINT
So huge congratulations to all three but especially Jay with this fantastic outcome, and commiserations to everyone else. NB. Rod Whelans has asked that images aren’t posted widely on social media as he’d like these to be ‘fresh’ to those that visit the exhibition to be hung in St Martin in the Bull Ring, Birmingham from 5 February until 3 March. There will be a Grand Prize Giving and Reception, to which all entrants are invited, at 2.00pm on Saturday 4 February.
PSA - COMPETITIONS
Round 1 of the digitally projected competitions (Colour, Mono, Nature) has been judged (see below) but the judging of the Print sections (Large Colour, Small Colour, Large Mono, Small Mono, Creative/Altered Reality) has all been deferred to the New Year for a variety of reasons. Building upon last year’s successes, we have got off to a great start (20% of images are given awards, the top 10% merit and the rest HMs)
- Nature PDI – Second place with 72 points (top club has 76) – with two awarded images
- Mono PDI –First place with 77 points (second place trails some way behind on only 66 points) – with four awarded images
- Colour PDI – First place with 69 points (second place scored 65 points) – with four awarded images
We’ve now got to focus on Round 2 closing in February, selection still to be made!
PAGB – GB CUP and TROPHY
These are actually four separate competitions, Open / Nature (GB Cup) for Digitally Projected Images, and Open / Nature (GB Trophy) for Prints. Selections for all four have been made and images sent. Good luck to everyone with chosen images. Competitions will be judges early in the New Year.
Last year our PDI results dipped a bit from our club best in 2021 – fingers crossed we can reverse that.
- GB Cup (PDI) Open 132 points (=25th). We came =16th in 2021 with 145 points.
- GB Cup (PDI) Nature 140 points (=8th). We came 5th in 2021 with 151 points.
However, the real star performance last year was in the Nature Prints where we came =2nd. Let's see if we can go one better.
- GB Trophy (Prints) Open 141 points (8th). We came =6th in 2021 with 153 points.
- GB Trophy (Prints) Nature 147 points (=2nd). We came 3rd in 2021 with 155 points.
WCPF – Inter Club Print Competition and DPIC.
Selections for these two competitions are in hand and those chosen to represent BPS will be notified shortly.
Both competitions are being held at the Corn Exchange Exeter on Sunday 5th February 2023. We need to finish in the top 2 in each to earn our place in the national championship later in the year – so keep your fingers crossed.
This promises to be a great day so why not join us in person on the day – Tickets £7 (including a £1 booking fee) from the Corn Exchange are available here - http://www.exeter.gov.uk/cornexchange
