PRESS ALERT: #BoycottWoolworths protest in Northern Cape city of Kimberley
Remaining true to the campaign's commitment of increasing #BoycottWoolworths protest activity, particularly given Woolworths recruitment of US pop star Pharrell Williams to undermine the boycott, members of BDS South Africa together with young people and members of the ANC Youth League (ANC YL), South African Students Congress (SASCO), Young Communist League (YCL), Congress of South African Students (COSAS), Northern Cape Ulama Council and other groups will be holding a protest march at the Woolworths branch in the Diamond Pavilion Mall in Kimberly, Northern Cape.
The protest march will start at 10h00 at the Kimberly City Hall first stopping at the Sol Plaatjie University where a memorandum will be handed to the University demanding that G4S Security (which is complicit in Israeli human rights abuses) be replaced with in-house security or local South African security companies. From the university, protestors will make their way to the Diamond Pavilion Mall in Kimberly, Northern Cape.
Yesterday activists in Cape Town had a tense crises meeting with the City of Cape Town regarding a mass protest at the upcoming Pharrell Williams Woolworths concert. The City of Cape Town postponed the meeting after failing to reach agreement on certain issues. #BoycottWoolworths protest organisers are adamant that they will proceed with their Cape Town gathering which is expected to attract over 50 000 protestors.
