Wednesday 2 April
Next week our speaker is John Lewis LRPS, BA (Hons) Photography, BA (Open), MBA who will be presenting his talk: Composition For The Viewer. John writes the following about his talk:

Composition is the key to creating interesting and exciting images, which reflect your own photographic style. The choices you make regarding frame, focus, timing and viewpoint set you apart from other photographers.  This presentation takes a detailed look at the approaches to composition taken by several famous photographers and examines the ‘rules’ of composition:  the ones you can safely ignore and the ones that nearly always work!

After retiring I have studied photography with the Open College of the Arts, now part of the University for the Creative Arts (UCA).  I graduated with a BA (Hons) Photography in April 2017.

In addition to my photographic interests, I studied with the Open University and obtained a BA degree in Computer Systems in 1983 and an MBA 1998.

Being a photographer is like going on a journey. A journey of seeing: Seeing the world differently, looking at the scene through a viewfinder and selecting the most effective composition, choosing the colours and ensuring the light is right for your message. All these things take time, effort and practice. Anyone can take a photograph, not everyone can take a good one.

Self Publishing
Last week's speaker, Paul Gooch, gave us a comprehensive talk on the pitfalls and successes of self publishing. At the end of the evening, he promised to send us a copy of the pdf of his slide show notes, which he duly did. This is a bit big to send as an attachment to this newsletter, but if you follow this link: A tale of 3 photobooks - presentation Mar 2025.pdf you will be able to download your very own copy.

He also mentioned a discount if anyone wanted to purchase his book, if you use the code "MAR#001" you will be able to get a 20% discount.

Help Needed
Volunteers sought to help keep the Hybrid/Zoom meetings going!

There is now a very limited number of people who can cover the projection and Zoom should Matt not show up or take a rare holiday! Therefore, we are looking for any volunteers who might be able to step up to help out or carry out a regular stint at the AV desk on Wednesday evenings and also support DIG meetings if needed…
  • Do you come to the clubroom and have working knowledge of Zoom, PowerPoint and Windows 11?
  • Are you able to think (fairly quickly) on your feet to troubleshoot?
  • Happy to cover some Wednesday nights and/or some DIG meetings?
If you can answer yes to the any or all of the above, or if you would just like to find out more, please email Matt at webmaster@bristolphoto.org.uk.
