Hello, Firstname |
|
|
Next Wednesday, 2 June, we will be welcoming our own Andrew Marker FRP to our screens. Andrew will be presenting his talk entitled “This Beautiful World”, an evening of landscape audio visual sequences.
Each sequence will be introduced verbally with a short paragraph of narration, giving some facts and figures about the place we are about to see. Destinations include Yellowstone National Park, Santorini, Namibia, Tuscany, Venice and Scotland.

|
Andrew became interested in photography at a young age when he was given a camera to record memories of school trips and family events.
He joined Bristol Photographic Society in 1982 and enrolled on the basic course. At that time the course focused on black & white film processing and printing. At the end of the course he set up a temporary darkroom in his bedroom and started producing monochrome prints. From these simple beginnings was born his love of photography
He also enjoyed taking colour images on transparency film and began producing audio visual sequences using 2 Kodak Carousel projectors, dissolve control unit and cassette tape sound tracks.
Andrew now uses modern software for his audio visual sequences.
He has been a key member of the Salon team since the early 1990's where he uses his AV skills to produce the Salon Show.
Andrew became an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society in October 2013 and gained his Fellowship 2½ years later in June 2016.

Here are some images from the evening to give you a flavour of what to expect |
President's Cup & Not The Garmston Bowl Competitions |
In this continuing Zoom era, we still plan to run the President's Cup competition, which is for a panel of three projected images. It will run with the rules as already set out, which include a bar on entrants holding a qualification of ARPS or above or their equivalents.
The President's Cup usually runs in parallel with the Garmston Bowl competition. This competition, for a panel of five prints, is open to all members. However, we still cannot run print competitions. So, as last year, we will run a competition with same structure and rules as the President's Cup, to which has been given the title ‘Not the Garmston Bowl’.
This competition will be a for a panel of three projected images with entry open to members who are over-qualified or barred from the President's Cup, it is to give the keen panellists who cannot enter the President's Cup a chance to show their wares and collect the ‘Not the Garmston Bowl’. Entries must be made in the same way as for the President’s Cup competition.
The closing date for entry to both competitions (though entrants can enter only one of the competitions) is next Wednesday, 2 June. The competitions will be judged on 23 June.

We now have a supply of the 2021 Bristol Salon catalogues. I will be at Unit 13 next Tuesday, 1 June from 1pm until about 3pm, so members who entered the exhibition are welcome to drop in to collect their copy. Please note, we will not be posting copies and this will probably be your only chance to get your hands on this much sought after publication! |

There are also 50 50cm x 40cm black mount boards for sale at £1.00 each, proceeds to the club. If you are interested in these, please email me at bpsnewsletter@bristolphoto.org.uk . These will be sold in 10s.

PAGB Inter-Federation PDI Competition |
This is a competition where each federation competes as a body rather than individual member clubs. The WCPF selection team have picked 4 images from BPS members for the Nature category and 9 images for the Open category as part of their 30 images in each category – fantastic recognition for members and the club. Congratulations to the following for their inclusion:

Great British Photography Challenge |
Portrait and fashion icon Rankin will mentor budding photographers through the four-part series, which started on BBC4 last Monday, 24 May at 9PM and continuing weekly (first episode available on catch up or iPlayer).
Rankin will be joined by celebrity guests and leading creatives from the art and fashion world including BBC Winterwatch presenter and wildlife photographer Chris Packham, award-winning documentarian Maryam Wahid and London based creative Lamarr Golding. Six passionate amateur photographers will take part, undertaking a range of themed weekly challenges across the UK, and although ultimately a winner will be chosen, none will be eliminated. The series follows the journeys of all six individuals as they are nurtured throughout the series and demonstrate their individual flair and vision.
The BBC share: "Each episode starts with an on-the spot-challenge set by Rankin to deliver a winning picture in just one hour, using nothing more than smartphone cameras. The contestants have to capture different settings, from the buzz of Brighton Beach to a fast-moving Boxing arena. "They also undertake specific projects with a celebrity expert in a specialist area of photography: Chris Packham, nature specialist and award-winning wildlife photographer; Maryam Wahid, documentary photographer whose work explores her identity as a British South Asian woman; and street photographer and creative Lamarr Golding, are among those setting assignments. "Finally they have to deliver on a high-pressure brief involving multiple elements such as clients, models, make-up artists and picture editors, including shooting renowned actress Anna Friel for a glossy magazine cover, and a high-end fashion shoot under the guidance of international stylist and fashion editor Cheryl Konteh.
Rankin said: “Being a part of the Great British Photography Challenge has been an incredible opportunity to nurture the next generation of photographers. All the contestants had such unique and varied backgrounds, but what brought them together was their love for photography. The contestants have exceptional promise and I’m excited for the UK to see their talent.”

With the situation regarding Covid beginning to ease, people are beginning to get back to some degree of normality. BPS Council has been discussing the re-opening of Unit 13 and at present are thinking along the lines of this happening at the beginning of September. However, some members might want to get back to doing a bit of studio work before then. If you are one of those members and think that you would like to start booking the studio before September, please let Mike Martin know so that a decision can be made about re-opening the studio - please email Mike at studiobookings@bristolphoto.org.uk. The studio is Covid safe, but users would be expected to conform to recognised Covid precautions.
Many thanks to those who have already replied.

Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Make Money For BPS Every Time You Shop On Amazon! |
Now we're all still in lockdown, the thought of on-line shopping must be looming large in many members' minds. It's worth remembering that if you so wish, each and every one of you can support BPS with every purchase you make on Amazon by using Amazon Smile. Click on the link below – then it’s self-explanatory.
Shopping using Smile is no different to your normal Amazon shopping and costs you nothing, it's just that you need to tell it that you wish to use Smile and then we get some pennies!

If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include it in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).
