Wednesday 30 October

Next week is another Zoom evening, when Steve Proctor will be Zooming into the clubrooms and to those at home and presenting his talk: Creative Portraits.
Steve is a member of two camera clubs, one of which is his local club Ribblesdale and the other is Chorley, which is one of the top clubs in the world.
He has attained the CPAGB, DPAGB and EPAGB distinctions. He has also reached BPE5* in the British Photographic Exhibitions circuit.
His two favourite subjects, photographically, are Wildlife and People, which between them fill a fair chunk of his portfolio. He is also a keen Sports and Dance photographer.
Steve says the following about his talk:

This presentation builds on both ‘My Journey’ & ‘Talk to Me’ (which talked about my journey through photography and techniques for getting better people shots respectively) as I discuss and show my later work focusing mainly on my people photography. I include the post processing ideas and techniques as well as why I work in this way. The emphasis here is on storytelling and making more memorable images that work well in competitions & salons.

Below are a few images to give a flavour of what we might expect. However, if you'd like to see more, just go to his website - https://stproc.net/:

DI Group - Practical Evening
Monday 11 November, 7.30pm. (Sorry - No zoom)

Next DI meeting will be on Monday 11 November and all members are welcome to attend in the clubroom. It will be first of the bimonthly meetings of a practical nature. A few members had expressed interest in a demo of mount cutting and Steve Field and Mike Martin have agreed to demonstrate the equipment they normally use. As printing is the final stage of exhibiting your images it is vitally important to have a clean cut and properly laid out window in the board to enhance the images you have printed. There will also be an opportunity to try cutting mounts using offcuts and ask questions on selection of mount boards and other properties of the boards. Both Steve and Mike are prolific printers and have a great deal of knowledge on the selection of mounts and papers. As usual these meetings are informal and you will have opportunity to chat to others present at anytime or over the coffee & biscuits break. If you use any other system of mount cutting equipment, please do bring it along to show how you use it and share your experience of using it. Due to the practical nature of the meeting these meetings will not be broadcast on zoom.

The December meeting in its usual form is still a few weeks away and Rachel will update you in due course on submissions for presentations. The next DI challenge is set for the December meeting and the folder of images and instructions will be uploaded in the next few days, well in time for that meeting.

Please get in touch with me if you have any questions.

Projected Image Competition
This from Rob Stephenson, PDI Competition Secretary:
Round 2 of the PDI competition closes on 6 November.  Could people who plan to enter, please ensure that their entries correctly follow the file naming convention that can be found below. Full details of all competition rules can be found on the BPS website in the Competitions Rules & Info - BPS Members' Portal.  Additionally, could all images please be sent as attachments and not as inline images within an email as they cannot be processed. It might be easier for some to zip their image files before adding to the email.

Projected Digital Image Competitions
  1. Send an email with your images as attachments to competitions@bristolphoto.org.uk and put the name and round of the competition in the subject line. When your images have been checked you will receive an email with a detailed Submission Report. If you do not receive the Submission Report, this may mean your images have not been received.
  2. Submissions can only be made by email and are not accepted on the night.
  3. Images must not be greater than 1600 pixels wide and 1200 pixels high, so note that Portrait format images must not be more than 1200 pixels high.
  4. Send the images as a JPG using the highest quality. (Other file types such as TIFF or PSD will not be accepted).
  5. The projector uses the sRGB colour space and hence you should save the images using the sRGB colour profile. Other profiles (such as Adobe98 or ProPhoto) may result in incorrect display of the image.
  6. Name each file you enter in the following pattern:
    1. 01, 02, 03, etc to show order of preference;
    2. Underscore (NOT a hyphen);
    3. Title of the image (which can contain spaces and hyphens but must not contain an underscore);
    4. Underscore (NOT a hyphen);
    5. Your Membership Number (If you do not know your number it can be found on your membership card or at the top of your weekly “BPS In Focus” newsletter.);
W (Club); or X (Intermediates); or Z (Advanced); or P (Prescribed); or Y (Nature) (this latter useable only for the annual PDI competition) showing the level for the entry.

Note: there can only be two underscores in the file name, one on each side of the image title. Spaces are to be used only within the image title.

As an example: 01_Morning Light_50W.jpg where number 01 is your first choice for order of preference, the image title is “Morning Light”, your membership number is 50 and ‘W’, denotes your level. There is an underscore between your entry order choice and the title, and there is an underscore between the title and your membership details.

WEX - Discounts
We have received the following from WEX:

I hope that you and your members are well. I’d like to preface by saying we have appreciated your continued custom over the years and hope to continue our relationship for many years to come.

Nevertheless, as we close out 2024, we at Wex must reappraise our needs and capabilities, ensuring that we are able to continue delivering the support we do. With this in mind, I regret to inform you that we are no longer able to continue offering the BPS member discounts, including the 3 for 2 offers on paper.

This has not been an easy decision and is a reflection of the ever-evolving nature of our industry, alongside the pressures of economics. We are still happy to utilise manufacturer discounts where we can, to ensure that we are offering you the best prices available to us and are able to curate bespoke quotes for larger orders.

We hope that you understand and please let me know if you have any further questions.

All the best,

Joe Aldous
Branch Manager

If you need to purchase paper with a handy discount, why not switch your allegiance to FotoSpeed, where you can claim a 20% discount by quoting Mike Martin and the code MM909123.

Exhibition to Visit
Some of you may have seen an item on the local BBC news this week about an exhibition of photographs by Bristol Photographer, Herbert Shergold. The exhibition is
Herbert Shergold: Now Keep Quite Still. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Herbert Shergold operated a commercial photography studio in Bristol to create highly stylised portraits of actors as well as of his local community. In Shergold’s studio, Bristol’s working class residents were styled to appear as Hollywood film stars.
Little is known of Shergold, although he lectured to Bristol Camera Club in 1952 with a presentation titled 'Accent on Glamour'. After his death, his photographs largely disappeared from view, falling into the possession of private collectors in the US, The Netherlands, as well as Bristol. From the latter collection, curator and photo historian Hedy van Erp has curated the first exhibition of Shergold’s work. This exhibition takes place close to the site of his original studio and is supported by Marcel Brent (Vintage Photographs) and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Entry is free.
