Wednesday 16 August

Next Wednesday our speaker is Peter Crane ARPS who will be presenting his talk entitled Street

Peter first got interested in Street Photography back in 2010 after early retirement. Back then he joined various regular street walking groups in London and also the Bath/Bristol area.

His next move was to develop his photography skills by joining a Camera Club, so he joined Highworth CC where he soon became a committee member whilst also gaining his LRPS in 2012.
He then became Chairman from 2012 through to 2014. In 2015 he felt he had enough knowledge and confidence to start giving talks on Street Photography, also in the same year he went on the SCPF judging workshop enabling him to start Camera Club judging. Continuing to develop himself he gained his ARPS in 2017.

In addition to him giving talks and judging at camera clubs he now occasionally runs Street Photography workshops/walks for Camera Club members in both London & Bristol.

The Covid pandemic years has restricted his street photography but he continues to enjoy the challenge!

Regarding equipment, the majority of his street photography has been done using Nikon cameras (D80, D7000, D7100 & D7200).  Recently he’s switched to Fujifilm, starting with the X-T2 and now the X-T4.

DI Group (Zoom) Meeting - Monday 14 August, 7.30pm
Last DIG meeting in July was a very rewarding evening and happily overran by fifteen minutes not to miss all that was submitted for presentation. There was quite a lot to take away from the constructive comments during the evening.

John Hudson doesn’t put his camera down for too long, or so it seems, from the variety of images from different genres of images he presents. Visiting a local pond was an opportunity to capture not only birds but also an intriguing mating dance of dragon flies. I enjoyed the colourful images of flowers heads in close up revealing shapes and textures. More of his stunning dance images were from Sadlers Wells captured in near impossible lighting conditions on the stage.

Ann Mead reported a dramatic decline in insects in her garden this year but her macro images are, as always, stunning in quality and pleasing in composition showing insects feeding on pollen in colourful flowers. She has set a high bar for others in the club to follow and it is no secret that the key to her success is knowledge of her subject and enormous patience.

Rachel Domleo recently scooped up a significant part of the silverware in the clubroom along with a lot of ribbons at the end of year presentations. It is not surprising looking at her presentation at the DI meeting, which showed a lot of imagination and creativity in her work. It focussed on creating panels of related images in groups of three to six images making them stronger than the individual image. One of Rachel's panels is shown below:

Colin Dixon is a frequent traveller to Italy, where he loves exploring and capturing images of cathedrals and church interiors as well as landscapes. While in Italy he has kept up with his interest in dance photography capturing images of a well-known ballerina against spectacular landscape as well as in urban settings with a clever use of local graffiti art. I am sure we will see his images again, blended in a very creative way, in future competitions.

Paul MacLeod took advantage of the annual St Pauls Carnival virtually on his doorstep. The popularity of the event means you are very restricted to your chosen location but Paul managed to capture not only the colourful and spirited carnival dancers but also equally spirited groups of spectators on the side. The response to Paul’s queries on improving his images generated most useful and helpful comments from others. I am sure there were useful tips to take away for Paul and others as well.

Steve Field was the last one to squeeze in his lovely images from the recent club outing to Birds of Pray centre in Wales. They are an extremely difficult subject to photograph especially when flying incredibly fast but Steve managed to capture some wonderful images of birds in flight as well as portraits which no doubt we will see in some future competitions.

The next DI group meeting is on Monday 14 August. The meeting is open to all BPS members. Please feel free to share your images with fellow members. It’s an opportunity to get a second opinion at the DI meeting from your fellow members or you might just enjoy showing off your work and experiments in an informal atmosphere. You are free to ask questions on digital imaging.

When you are ready, please email your images for presentation to reach me by 6pm-ish Sunday 13 August. Images: JPG format, sRGB colour space, 1600 x 1200 pixels (same as competitions but not strict). To show them in a specific order, please prefix filenames with 01, 02, 03 etc. Email attachment size - max 20Mb per email, as many as necessary. You may also use WeTransfer or Dropbox if convenient, but I am not equipped to receive by direct transfers from Google or Apple Mac systems.

Lost A Brolly On Last Week's BPS Outing?
Did you lose a brolly on the outing last week, i.e. did you leave it in the pub? If the answer is yes, then you'll find it hanging on the notice board behind the main computer desk in the clubrooms.

PAGB & AI
The PAGB have now joined the AI band wagon and have come up with an interim "Discussion document", which is covered in special edition of the PAGB e-news, which can be downloaded HERE. I have to say, with all the words that have been written on the subject, I'm tempted to take up embroidery instead!

BPS Library
I wouldn't mind betting that there is a fair percentage of the Society members who aren't even aware that we have a library. This is probably not surprising and is due to the fact that it has been hidden away upstairs since we moved from Clifton back in 2015. However, this has all changed, it is now located on the shelving in the corner of the coffee area, by the window and on your left as you enter the meeting room. Not only do we have a library, we also have a Librarian - David Alderson and he will be only too happy to help you fill out a ticket should you wish to borrow any of these mighty tomes!

Tour of Britain 2023

Full details of the Tour can be found on the official ToB website: tourofbritain.co.uk

Below is the route through Yate and surrounding area, with the complete route below that:
