Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
IN THE BEGINNING GOD
Can you see the huge canvas upon which God is about to paint? Are you awed by the scope and magnitude of it? A blank canvas with nothing on it, God at the ready, with brush in hand about to create. This simple statement which stands at the head of all of Scripture is in itself beyond our comprehension. To imagine nothing but God existing, we cannot. Was it dark? Was it black? But since God is light and in Him dwells no darkness at all, maybe at the beginning there was light. But as yet light as we know it was not yet created. It is best then to leave that to eternity.
Why mention it if we are to leave it? We mention it so that we might gain a little understanding of how great God truly is, and how little, even with the knowledge we have, we truly are.
In the beginning, God alone existed, and in the beginning you and I were not there, nor was anyone. So God's words to Job are true today, "Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?" Because we cannot see God, because we cannot see His actual hand -- physically -- guiding the events of the world for His purposes. We can forget, or push into the background the greatness and power of God. We can forget His great majesty and glory and quickly think more of ourselves and our intelligence than we ought.
It is good to revisit the creation of the world so that we humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God, for in the beginning there was none but God.
