From the Church Guy
For the year 2016, I have a theme.  The line is one my daughter first said to me way back in 2001.  She said, "Lighten up, Godboy!"

I do a lot of reading, and lately I've become fascinated by books outlining research on brain science, neurobiology, and the psychology of happiness.  Of course, I'm not reading technical scientific studies, but books by accomplished psychologists who are also talented writers, able to give laypersons clear explanations of this advanced research.

Anyway, I'm pleased to tell you that being part of a faith community is good for you.  All studies on human happiness indicate that social connections - the kind of caring relationships we have at St. Mark's - are proven to increase health and happiness in measurable ways.

Turns out my mom was right, though I resisted as a small child.  Going to church is good for you!

     See you in church!

Eat, Sing and Be Merry
Have you tried coming to the table?  The St. Mark's Table, that is.  On Tuesday, May 17, some of us will gather downstairs at 6 pm for a potluck meal.  The food is always good, because people bring food to share (as well as their own place settings).  We eat together and enjoy an opportunity for relaxed conversation with church friends.  At about 7, Father Mark pulls out his guitar and leads us in singing.  And then at about 7:15, we have a simple Eucharist around the table.  We are on our way rejoicing at 7:30.  Join us!

 Please Help with the Canteen
Our next date to serve a hot meal to the needy is Sunday, May 22.  Can you sign up?  It's two hours of your time and a small donation of food.  But it makes a huge difference, and gladdens the heart of Christ!

 What's New in Sunday School
Our Youth Sunday service is on May 1 at the 10 o'clock.  This is when the children take an active part in the worship service by reading the lessons, psalm, prayers of the people, Kid Stuff, and ushering.  It is also Rogation Sunday, a time when we pray for a fruitful harvest.  In accordance with that theme the Junior Youth Group is working on organizing a church grounds clean-up day.  The children made posters advertising the event and a sign-up sheet which will be on the side bulletin board.  If you can help please bring gloves, rakes, gardening tools, trimmers - large & small.  Food & beverages will be provided.  Come help make St. Mark's grounds beautiful!

Pentecost Sunday is May 15 - the birthday of the Christian church.  The Sunday school will be hosting Coffee Hour at 10.  They will also be making decorations for the church.  Be sure to come and see their work!

What's new for the Book Club
For May, the group will discuss "All The Light We Cannot See," a novel by Anthony Doerr about the lives of a blind French girl and a gadget-obsessed German boy during World War II.  The novel is unusually structured to play with time, immersing the reader in the vivid, unfolding experiences of each character, and providing two unique perspectives on the war.  The two characters are tied together through the importance of sound, from a portrayal of how senses become heightened with the loss of sight, to the power of media and propaganda.

 Liturgy Notes from the Rector
At a recent Vestry meeting, it was suggested that I give a little instruction in the newsletter about our Sunday liturgies.  For example, at the 8:00 service, not everyone realizes that we have an Offertory Prayer, as I lift our offerings over the altar, symbolically presenting them to God.  The words of that prayer are actually from the 1928 Book of Common Prayer, and some people don't know them.  The words are: "All things come of Thee, O Lord; and of Thine own have we given Thee."

Another Vestry suggestion was to move the monthly prayers for healing to the last Sunday instead of the first Sunday.  At 8:00, we use Rite l at 8:00, which is longer than Rite ll, so adding the healing on top of that may not be the best idea.  I was happy to comply with that request, and now we'll offer prayers for healing on the last Sunday of each month.

I am often asked for the words of the blessing we use at St. Mark's.  I love these words, and am happy to print them here again.  I found them in another church of the diocese, printed on a card in a pew rack.  "Life is short, and we do not have too much time to gladden the hearts of those with whom we journey along the way.  So let us be swift to love, and make haste to be kind.  and the blessing of God Almighty..."

Feel free to suggest questions I might address in future Liturgy Notes in the newsletter!
