The joyous and auspicious occasion of Diwali is upon us once again.

 

Diwali symbolizes many things for our friends and comrades from the Hindu community: it is a celebration of Lord Vishnu's victory over Narkasura, a time of seeking blessings and praying for prosperity including worshipping Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, fortune, and prosperity.

 

Significantly, Diwali, as the festival of lights, signifies the triumph of good over evil, righteousness, joy and prosperity for all. It is a reminder that the struggle of good over evil and light over darkness is a continuous effort that requires our attention and determination.

In honouring Diwali we are also made aware that no matter how dark the world may seem to be, good is bound to prevail for as long as there are determined people upholding justice and promoting good. This spirit of "the triumph of good over evil" gave us hope during he 1980s in the struggle against apartheid and continues to gives us hope today in the Palestinian struggle and boycott against Israeli Apartheid.

We extend our heartfelt good wishes to all our Hindu comrades and supporters observing the celebration of Diwali and we offer our sincerest festive greetings to the Hindu community of South Africa.

We trust that this Diwali will be a Woolworths-free Diwali :-)
