Wednesday 6 October

Next Wednesday, we were due to welcome Ed Cloutman EFIAP Hon.FWPF to Unit13 to present his 3 part talk. Unfortunately, Ed has had to change his talk to Zoom instead of live as he has an important medical MOT which he doesn't reckon he can get out of.

I appreciate that many of you will be suffering from Zoom fatigue after these many months of remote meetings, but you need not worry - the meeting is being Zoomed directly to the clubrooms and you'll be able to watch it in full Cinemascope with Dolby surround sound - well, maybe not quite that good, but you get my meaning.

The talk will be split into three sections:
Bermuda revisited
I was asked by the Curator and Director of the Maritime Museum in Bermuda if I would go and overhaul their turret clock. This used to have four dials in the tower of the Naval Great Eastern Storehouse. It is a large clock, now residing in a gallery of the Museum.

Although I was working, I had enough time to get a feel for the Island and meet some of its inhabitants, thanks to my friend at the Museum. This talk therefore gives you a flavour of what to expect if you ever visit Bermuda.

What Judges look for
Typically, when one goes around clubs judging, one sees the same problems occurring where members lose marks unnecessarily. However much they are told, they seem to make the same errors. This talk does not go into composition or the artistic nature of the picture.  That would be a lecture in itself.

The basis of the talk is a tick list, which can be downloaded from the WPF website, of things to look out for when you are preparing your picture for judging. Things like cropping, backgrounds, simplicity.  It is assumed that you are competent to take a sharp picture at the correct exposure, so it is not about technique.

My Life in Cameras
This is a short talk on the cameras I have used since I was given my first camera in about 1952. It ranges from simple box cameras to a 5x4 Linhof  Technika and then in the digital age a 2 mega pixel Olympus (which I still use) to a Canon Eos 5DSR

Steve Field
Those of you at the club meeting this week will have heard the announcement that our much-venerated Programme Secretary was in hospital following a suspected heart-attack. I'm pleased to be able to report that Steve is now home and that it wasn't a heart attack after all - I guess that's one big sigh of relief in the Field household!

Three Score and Ten?
A message from the Membership Secretary
This is to remind members that once they reach the age of 70 and have 20 years of unbroken membership, the annual membership fee drops to £21.

Please let me know when this applies to you and I will update my records accordingly.

Early Start & Masters of Print

ADVANCED WARNING - EARLY START - Wednesday 13 October

An evening not to be missed - BPS won the award for the most successful club in the deferred 2020 MASTERS OF PRINT earlier this year, for the second year running. To mark this auspicious occasion, we are opening up the club rooms half an hour earlier (6:30 for 7pm start) as Rod Whelans (co-ordinator of this competition), distinguished guests from the PAGB and representatives from Permajet (Sponsors) visit us to make the formal presentation of the award.

As luck has it, this is also the print competition night, so they can be stunned by the overall standards we achieve.

Finally, there is still time to submit your entry for this year’s Masters of Print. Each entry will score points towards the club award – so if you have any images you’re proud of/really like, why not have a go – entries to Steve Field progsec@bristolphoto.org.uk. All judging has an element of subjectivity and who knows, the selectors may love it as much as you do.

Together let’s see if BPS can make it three wins in a row Smile
