Next Wednesday, 9 September, we welcome Polina Plotnikova to our screens, when she will be presenting her talk Starting from a Blank Canvas. Polina is a very accomplished picture maker based in South East England who will be talking by the magic of Zoom. This is a two part presentation featuring Creative Flowers and Still Life photography in the studio and focusing on how to start creating an image in your mind's eye and proceed to taking photographs only after all details have been thought through complete with historical references and technical tips. Polina says of her talk:

Flowers and still life are my favourite photography subjects. Still life in particular is perfect for a perfectionist like me – no one fidgets or makes faces, no sudden gust of wind or some other quirk of ever-changing weather can spoil your shot. But, by the same token, you cannot count on something interesting that just happens all of a sudden – it is all up to you; the choices are infinite, and the final result is entirely in your own hands. The approach to flower photography that I take is somewhat similar to that of a portrait photographer – for every flower and plant that I photograph, I always try to find its unique look, study its mood and character, and ultimately unlock the hidden beauty of my models. A successful flower portrait attempts to discover something unique in a flower, something hidden or not necessarily obvious at first sight. While appreciating the natural beauty of plants and trying to stay true to their original look, I do not limit my point of view to purely botanical. Instead, I try to lift a flower off its typical setting and put it into indeterminate space, where its beauty can be seen in all its purity.

This week we have said farewell to long-standing member Keith Wood, as he has taken the momentous decision to move north of the border to live close to his daughter in Grantown on Spey. Keith was a major player in the move to Unit13 and has long been our unofficial "procurement officer", managing to find things that nobody else could and at prices none of us could match, our loss is also Ebay's loss!
We wish Keith and Ira all the best in their new life, although we won't be losing touch completely as he will become a country member and continue to join our Zoom meetings.

Newsletter Flagged up as Dangerous! |
Several members received on screen warnings before opening last week's issue of the newsletter, which to some less adventurous souls may have been pretty offputting. You can rest assured that there is nothing wrong with the newsletter, its just that some anti-virus programmes and some email programmes see contained URLs as a potential threat. Just to be on the safe side, YMLP who host our newsletter, have switched us to a different domain in an attempt to reduce these false warnings. |
DISTINCTIONS - IMPORTANT REQUEST |
In preparation for the annual report by the Company Secretary for presentation to the auditors, would you please let Carol know of any changes in your distinctions (shown at the head of this newsletter) by emailing her at membership@bristolphoto.org.uk |
BPS club member Andrew Jones has just opened a new gallery dedicated to photography, f4 Photography Gallery.
The gallery is based in Clifton Arcade in the heart of Clifton Village, and opened its doors over the August bank holiday weekend. Reflecting Andrew’s passion for landscapes, it currently sells his own images of Bristol and the mountains of the French alps.
Of more relevance to BPS members, Andrew is keen to include a wider range of images and genres and is looking for applications from other photographers wanting to exhibit and sell their work; “It can be difficult for photographers to gain retail exposure” explained Andrew, “f4 offers a dedicated space that allows customers to engage fully with images, showcasing the photography at it’s best. I hope that the many talented photographers in Bristol and the surrounding area will see this as a great opportunity to gain exposure for their work, raise their profile and potentially sell their images”
So, if you are keen to exhibit and sell your images please either pop into the gallery (Unit 4 The Clifton Arcade, BS8 4AA) or email Andrew at f4.photography@icloud.com for more details.

The Story Behind the Photograph
Jacob Rees-Mogg and me: the art of the political picture
Online on Saturday 12th September, 2020 at 7pm
You are invited to this special event where my SixBySix colleague and friend Craig Easton will interview me about one of my most iconic and widely-published images - the photograph of aspiring English politician Jacob Rees-Mogg taken during his failed attempt to be elected as an MP in Fife, Scotland in 1997.
I will reveal the story behind how the photograph was taken, the circumstances of an extraordinary day on the doorsteps of Glenrothes and what happened next as the career of Jacob Rees-Mogg became intertwined with the photograph over subsequent years.
The event will be held exclusively online via Zoom and will not be broadcast elsewhere. It would be a privilege to have you in the audience on the night, where there will be a chance to ask questions and comment on the photograph and the wider issue of how politicians are represented in photographs.
The event costs £8 to attend, will last for approximately one hour and places are limited. If you sign-up but find you cannot attend on the night, I will send you a recording of the event to view afterwards.

It's that lady again, Sue O'Connell: Three Gold medals to report (Danube, Taiwan and Macedonia) and 7 HMs. These include several new images, which are all-important as those pursuing FIAP distinctions will know. For anyone mad enough to aim at the top level, EFIAP/D3, not only do you have to achieve silly numbers of awards (200) but you also need to do this with at least 50 different “works”, and that’s some challenge. These results bring my tally to 44, so only 6 left to go. But there are no guarantees and awards are getting harder to achieve all the time as standards keep on rising - wish me luck!
And yes, Barry (Mead) is still at it, having been awarded a PSA Gold medal in the Welsh International with his image, Last Look Back, derived from a BPS studio session at the end of 2018.
