Our next speaker at BookShop West Portal is a science writer, so it seems appropriate that we’re doing an experiment.
We are teaming up, for the first time, with a terrific nonprofit organization called Wonderfest.
Their goal is to “stimulate curiosity, promote careful reasoning, challenge unexamined beliefs, and encourage life-long learning.”
These folks seem like a good match for a bookstore, right?
The truth is, I’ve been attending Wonderfest events for the past 15 years.
I’m a die-hard fan, and I’m hopeful that this is the first of many collaborations.
And who are we welcoming?
That would be New Yorker staff writer and National Book Award finalist Alan Burdick, the author of Why Time Flies: A Mostly Scientific Investigation.
I’ve already copped to being a science geek, so I’ll further admit to reading any number of books on the physics of time.
However, I’ve never read a book quite like Mr. Burdick’s.
Rather than concentrating on the physics, he’s looking at the human perception of time—the psychology, the neurology, and a surprising number of other disciplines.
Mr. Burdick’s examination is broad in scope and beautifully reported.
Not only does he have the scientific chops, he’s a first-rate observer, often becoming a test subject.
Please join BookShop West Portal, along with Wonderfest, in welcoming Alan Burdick on Thursday, February 9, 2017 at 7:00pm.
Time is flying; see you soon!
