Next Wednesday we have a talk by Roger Hance FRPS, intriguingly titled The Boy Stood on the Burning Deck! This is a digital presentation showing a wide variety of subject matter ranging from Landscape, Natural History, Portraits, Sport, Photojournalism, Still Life and much more. In both Colour and Black and White, it shows some of Roger's favourite `haunts` that he goes to obtain images.

Members may be aware that Bristol City Council is proposing to implement Residents’ Parking Zones in many areas of the City. They plan to introduce parking restrictions in Clifton Village which will operate between 9am and 7pm Monday to Saturday; however they are asking residents for their views on extending this to 9pm. These proposals are expected to come into force in the middle of next year and you can see the full extent of these by visiting the Council website (please click this link)
At present the proposals are still at the discussion stage and the City Council has asked residents for feedback from interested parties; however, it seems a done deal that some form of restriction will be imposed. Neil McCoubrey has sent a letter to the City Council in his capacity as BPS Chairman explaining our concerns and outlining the possible effects that the restrictions could have on the Society.
It is unclear yet whether the changes proposed will actually improve or make worse the parking availability for BPS members. It depends very much on the future behaviour of others who regularly park in Clifton. One thing is clear, if the effective time of the zone is 9am to 9pm then it will require BPS members to pay for 2 hours parking for a Wednesday meeting. If the zone is only active from 9am to 7pm then BPS members should not have to pay anything.
We will await the City Council’s decision with particular respect to the effects it could have on the Society. BPS Council will keep you advised of any developments as and when we hear anything.

This week's Star Picture was taken by Andrew Wood and is possibly as sign of things to come as it was taken on his iPhone
|
|
It's rather disappointing that Andrew is the only member to have responded to my plea for images to put in the Newsletter. We're a photographic Society, which implies that most, if not all members have cameras and take pictures, so come on and let's see some of those pictures!

I have received the following from Kingswood Photographic Society:
Kingswood Photographic Society is absolutely delighted to welcome Chris Weston as their speaker on Friday 1st November. The title of Chris’s illustrated talk is ‘Animals on the edge’.
Chris became a professional wildlife photographer in 2001 in order to follow his passion for what he describes as “the extraordinary behaviour of wildlife”. His contemporary approach to photography led to Amateur Photographer magazine describing him as “One of the most dynamic wildlife photographers working today.” He specializes in photographing mammals and endangered species and is renowned for his ability to connect with wildlife and reveal the often hidden personalities of his subjects through his images.
His work is published globally, with clients including the BBC, ITV, The Daily Telegraph, The Independent, The Guardian, and National Geographic. In 2011 his images were selected by The Sunday Times magazine for its feature titled “The Year’s Best Animal Photographs”.
Chris’s work is driven by conservation. In 2009, he published the iconic book Animals on the Edge: Reporting from the Frontline of Extinction, which has been described as “The most up-to-date visual survey of our world’s rare and endangered species.” The book led to Chris co-founding the charity Animals On The Edge and he is directly involved in the charity’s work expanding tiger territory in Kanha National Park, in India, and supporting a lion release program in Zimbabwe. In 2011 he was named by Outdoor Photography magazine as one of the world’s “40 Most Influential” wildlife photographers.
This is an evening not to miss so we hope to see you there.
Kingswood PS meets Fridays from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at St Barnabas Church Hall, Warmley, Bristol BS30 5JJ. Visitors are most welcome and the cost for this evening is £3.00.

We have received the following details of an exhibition being held at Tower Wharf, Cheese Lane, BS2 0JJ:
I would like to invite your society to visit The Photographic Angle’s free photography exhibition which will be taking place in Bristol from 02-06th November 2013.
200 Faces brings together the work of photographers who've all taken the face as their subject. Here we see the canvas on which all our emotions are played out exposed: suffering, happiness, contentment, frustration and anxiety.
Entry is free and the exhibition will be open daily from 10am to 3pm.
I would very much appreciate it if you could extend our invitation to all of your members who may be interested in attending our exhibition.
Please see the attached leaflet or visit our website for more details.
If you would like to receive paper copies of our leaflets on a regular basis in the post, please do let me know and I will organise this for you.
Many Thanks,
Stacey Szyperek

Well done to Val Duncan who has gained her EPSA award in the Photographic Society of America. This is some achievement when you consider that Val has had over 700 acceptances in PSA approved exhibitions in the last 18 months. Husband Greg is snapping at her heels though, with nearly 700 acceptances, so get your finger out, Greg, as I said last week, you've got the honour of us chaps to uphold!
I mentioned Andrew Marker's ARPS last week and that I hoped that we would see the panel on the wall before too long. Unfortunately the RPS have kept Andrew's pictures for a while, but you can still see the full panel by visiting the BPS website
If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
