OCTOBER 22ND AND 23RD
Dancing Through the Light is a collaboration with Dance Parade, a NYC-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote dance as an expressive and unifying art form.   Please join us for this most unique and magical way to kick off our 6th season of Dance Parade!

Saturday, October 22

Sunday, October 23
12:00 pm  & 4:00 pm

Performed among the trees, lakes and carriage paths of Green-Wood, and framed by the radiant light of the autumn sky, this celebration of world dance illuminates the many cultures and traditions reflected in those who’ve made Green-Wood their final resting place. Visitors will stroll through Green-Wood to experience a myriad of dance vignettes set against the backdrop of Green-Wood’s natural beauty and 173 years of history.

At press time, NYC BHANGRA, S.T.A.T. (Strictly Traditional Argentine Tango), Anabella Lenzu/DANCE DRAMA  and the Hula skills of KAINA QUENGA have been confirmed but more groups are in the process of being added to the roster.  Expect a wonderful variety of dance companies that will represent the different cultures Dance Parade New York showcases year after year!

JOIN THE NYDP (NEW YORK DANCE POLICE) AT THE 2011 HALLOWEEN PARADE!

Dance Parade is looking for a few good men and women to join the force...the New York Dance Police!

Members of the NYDP peruse the crowd and issue out summonses to those not enjoying themselves,  standing still and looking like they're simply not having a good time!   Enforcing positive energy and sheer fun is the mantra of the NYDP and local dance companies and schools have offered discount passes and coupons for free classes in which we disguise as 'citations' promoting our annual parade and festival.

To join the New York Dance Police please contact Captain Susan at susan@danceparade.org for more information.   The Halloween Parade is the perfect initiation for sure!

DNA is happy to begin offering classes for young dancers in the spirit of excellence that our adult classes follow. Age-appropriate dance concepts will be introduced in a relaxed and creative environment, and each dancer will be encouraged to find her or his own dancing spirit!

Each course offers two 45-minute class periods every Saturday, beginning September 10, 2011.  A sampler of dance styles lets your young dancer explore the excitement of dance. The end of the session will culminate in a showcase which families and friends are welcome to attend. Get ready to come see your dancer shine!
Dance genres offered will include:

  • Tap
  • Hip-Hop
  • Modern

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT :
SARAH HANNAH

Dance Parade, Inc. is an all volunteer supported non-profit organization! It is the dedication, expertise and rhythm of these brave few that are solely responsible for the success of the event and all the background work that goes on all year long leading up to the parade and festival. Every month, we choose a different volunteer to spotlight.
We ask them a few questions to let you know who they are, where they’ve come from and where they see themselves in the future.

How did you first stumble upon Dance Parade?

A few years ago I actually marched in the parade with one of the floats and thought it was amazing. Earlier this year I had been trying to get involved in a volunteer organization when a friend of mine introduced me to the DP team. It took a bit of time to really get involved but once I did, things really took off and I got to work with a variety of teams from the group leaders to the executive committee.

What is your current role in Dance Parade?

I was recently elected to take over as Marketing Chair for the organization and
am very excited to be working with such fantastic people.

What is your favorite style of dance to watch? to participate in?

Dance has always been something I’ve felt passionate about and I love getting
out with my friends and hitting a club…it’s where I feel most myself , as well as
when I’m most happiest. The picture shown here is one of my best dancing
memories, which my grandmother and sister. (I’m on the far right). For my
birthday this year, I designed a tattoo of four dancing people to represent this
feeling and now have it on the inside of my right bicep. I also enjoy
participating in and watching many other forms of dance ranging from Salsa to
Tango, or going to a dance hall like Dance Manhattan for their free dance nights.
