Wednesday 11 October

Next week our speaker is our own John Chamberlin FRPS MFIAP who will be entertaining us with his talk - Magical Mashatu and other Memorable Moments. John writes the following about his talk:

I am conscious that many newer BPS members will not be aware of my photographic background which now goes back over 45 years. I joined BPS in the 1970’s and obtained both an ARPS and FRPS in the early 80’s. I worked then in b/w and colour shooting both slides and mono film and produced a creative panel using the Cibachrome process for my Fellowship. My interest in Natural History developed in the 1980’s when I photographed all the then species of British butterflies.
By the early 90s I had started to travel quite extensively, taking people pictures in countries such as India and Cuba and landscapes, particularly in the USA. For wildlife images, I visited locations around the world from the Arctic to the Antarctic and from the Galapagos Islands to Japan. I have a particular love for Africa which I have visited over 30 times.

For many years I served on the RPS Distinctions Panels for Pictorial/Visual Art photography, Travel, and Natural History. This year after being on the WCPF judges/lecturers list for over 40 years I ‘handed in my notice’. I think I have been on the judging panel, at some time, for all the International and most of the National Exhibitions run in the UK since the 1980’s. I could write a book about my experiences, but the good moments did outweigh the bad – just! My enthusiasm for competitions has also waned BUT I still enjoy taking images and making pictures as much as I have ever done over the past 40 plus years.

So now to this presentation! All the images have been taken in the last 12 months and centre around a visit to Mashatu. None have been shown at the club before, entered into competitions or become book covers!

Mashatu is the largest private reserve in Botswana, occupying part of the Limpopo Valley which separates Botswana and Zimbabwe from South Africa. It has a large variety of wildlife including a big population of Leopards perhaps the most elusive of African predators. As a private reserve, vehicles, which are few and far between, can travel ‘off track’ and their numbers are limited to three at any single wildlife sighting. It is probably the best safari location I have had the good fortune to visit.

In addition, and by way of variety, there will a selection of other wildlife images taken at several other locations both in the UK and further afield during the past 12 months.

Below are a couple of images from the talk:

Digital Imaging Group
DI Group (Clubroom/Zoom) Meeting – Monday 9 October, 7.30 pm

A quick reminder that the October DI meeting on Monday 9 October will be mark the return of the Group to the clubrooms, although it will also be run as a hybrid meeting.

Last DIG meeting in September was an evening full of images of a variety of genres from five presenters.

John Hudson shared some beautiful images of dragon flies mating in mid-air captured while sipping coffee in an outdoor café! I wonder how he does it. His other passion is for drone photography. Combined with his knowledge of using HDR and constructing high quality multiple image panoramas from the drone it has given him a superb advantage in capturing familiar landmarks from high up in the air.

Steve Field ventured out in a storm to capture some dramatic images of the waves breaking up on sea defences and nearly got swept away. Fortunately he returned safely to continue with his studio work and applying creative techniques in posing the models as well as processing the images.

Rachel Domleo with her creative mind sees a completely a different image from what is in front of her eyes. With further help from editing tools and skillful blending with other images she can turn a rusty panel into a forest in autumn with wildlife. Many of her images were presented as tryptic or multiple images within a single image. It has some merits as each multiple image conveys a lot more information than a single one. Her favourite place for landscapes and architecture is near Tate Modern where within a short time she captured enough images for a distinction panel.

Colin Dixon continues with portrait photography of models in the traditional and also his unique creative style where the studio images were skillfully blended with different backgrounds and textures to create a story. Where appropriate the images were presented as monochrome with good effect.

Anita Fullerton presented some of her images from the BPS walkabout in the city centre which scored almost full marks for the challenge set by Jay Hallsworth. She showed some striking landscapes captured using her phone when her old camera was out of action. The quality of modern phone photographs is rapidly coming close to some of the DSLR cameras.

The meeting is open to all BPS members, and you are welcome to share your images with fellow members. At the DI meeting you have an opportunity to get a second opinion from your fellow members. If you enjoy showing off your work and experiments in an informal atmosphere or ask questions on digital imaging you are welcome to join.

For submission of images I would still like to maintain the current system of sending images to me before the meeting which allows me to prepare the presentation folder in advance because it has worked well. When you are ready, please email your images for presentation to reach me by 6pm-ish Sunday 8 October. Images: JPG format, sRGB colour space, 1600 x 1200 pixels (same as competitions but not strict). To show them in a specific order, please prefix filenames with 01, 02, 03 etc. Email attachment size - max 20Mb per email, as many as necessary. You may also use WeTransfer or Dropbox if convenient, but I am not equipped to receive by direct transfers from Google or Apple Mac systems.

Left Your Coat Behind?
Someone has left a dark blue jacket in the club rooms over the back of a chair near the computer desk.

If it is yours, it can either be retreived at next Wednesday's meeting or if you need it before then, you can try during the PWD meeting on Monday between 11am and 2pm.

Masters of Print
As previous mentioned, we are not going to cajole people to participate this year, however, it would still be great if we had a strong entry.  Acceptance in this exhibition is a great accolade, and it would be fantastic if one of our members echoed Jay Hallsworth’s success last year, being awarded Best Print in the exhibition!

Ralph mentioned this Wednesday that there is a box at the front on the stage, for anyone who would like him to deliver the prints by hand on your behalf, at the PAGB Inter Club Print Battle.
If you would like to take advantage of this offer and avoid the hassle or cost of postage, you need to:
  • Check out the rules on the PAGB Site
  • Enter / upload digital copies of your entry on the PAGB CES system
  • Bring in your labelled, UNMOUNTED A3 Prints to Unit 13 on a Wednesday evening at the normal club evening or Monday between 11am-2pm when Mike Martin will be in Unit 13 with the Photographers with Disabilities group.
DEADLINE.  If you want Ralph to deliver in your behalf, please bring in prints on or before WEDNESDAY 17 October.

You can of course enter after this date up to the official closing date but you would have to make your own arrangements to deliver the prints.
