Hello Firstname

Wednesday 9 May

Next Wednesday we welcome Philip Joyce ARPS DPAGB who will be presenting his talk Short StoriesPhilip will discuss his pictures and approach to photography in “Short Stories”. He looks at subjects including zoos, street life, total strangers, being a dog, gipsy communities and Pride events, amongst numerous others.
With a documentary sensibility and street photography style, he will talk about engaging with his subjects and his motivations in continuing to develop portfolios of favourite subjects, whilst adding a personal narrative that links the stories together. Philip hopes his work will encourage others to reflect on their own approach and perhaps explore new directions.

An example of Philip's work (the photo, not the pig'shead!)

Bi Monthly Competitions Review
The following is a joint communique from the Competition Secretaries:

We have reached the end of the first year with the “Prescribed” category at Advanced level and we would like to know what you think about it.

As competition secretaries, we are pleased with this innovation.  Members have risen to the challenges, there have been very few problematic images and judges have taken things in their stride.

We are happy to continue with this element of the competitions but, with next year’s programme needing to be confirmed soon, would appreciate your comments.  Please speak to either of us in person or email us at:

Faking It!
I'm indebted to Steve Newman for sending me details of how not to cheat in a major photographic natural history competition. A photographer entered the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, however his interpretation of Natural History turned out to be more a case of Still Life!. NEW

Until 13 May
Brief Encounters by Mark Fairhust can be seen at the Goods Shed Tetbury (Gumstool Hill, Tetbury, GL8 8DG).
Photographer Mark Fairhurst began his career photographing inanimate objects, from jewellery to plugs, which were used in advertising. Seeing his work, someone told him that if you can make a plug look good, imagine what you can do for people.
It was this that sparked the idea of switching to portraiture and now an exhibition of his work is to be shown at Tetbury Goods Shed in Gloucestershire.
Fairhurst's pictures are usually taken on location and often he has little time to capture the image he wants.
Brief Encounters displays images taken on a one-to-one basis, often only with a short time to prepare the set on location.
"It's a challenge to create a relaxed atmosphere other than in a studio," says Fairhurst. "I would never have thought that I would be in front of so many famous people in my career."
He works in black and white taking inspiration from photographers such as Irving Penn, Jane Bown, David Bailey and Richard Avedon.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
I have received news of the following successes by BPS members in international exhibitions:

Barry Mead - 5 awards in Sydney Harbour, Australia (1 gold, 3 silver and a ribbon) and 2 awards at Cheltenham (1 gold and a ribbon)

BPS was well represented in the recent SouthamptonInternational, with the following members gaining acceptances: Barry Mead (1), Jeff Hargreaves (6 incl 2 awards), John Chamberlin (5), Peter Brisley (5) and Sue O'Connell (4).

Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
