In addition to examining the "dirty dozen" of produce, we will also address the 12 most pervasive and detrimental food additives and substances you can eat. Info from the LVHMC Farms!
Each week we give you a look at what is happening at the LVHMC member's farms and businesses.
When not baking for the Wednesday Leesburg and Saturday Ashburn Farmers Markets, Layered Cake Patisserie owners, Barbara and Anthony Chavez specialize in creating beautiful wedding and special occasion cakes. Anthony says that most brides select their cakes about 6 months in advance of the wedding, although they have made cakes with as little as a week's notice! Selection starts with the bride and groom scheduling an appointment for a tasting--check out Layered Cake Patisserie's website for all their flavors: www.layeredcakepatisserie.com
Assembling a wedding cake is basically a 4 day process for Anthony and Barbara. On the first day, the cakes are baked and the fillings made. Day 2, the cakes are cut and filled, the given a light crumb coating and refrigerated to set-up. On Day 3, the cakes are given a buttercream coating, covered with fondant then decorated. For delivery (always the most stressful part), the cakes are stabilized with dowels for the journey. Finishing touches are added at the delivery site.
If a cake has decorations like gum paste flowers or chocolate work (Anthony's specialty!), these are made a week or more in advance so they have time to dry and hold their shape.
Anthony says that their lemon cake is one of their most popular; in fact, he and Barbara have made lemon wedding cakes for two members of their family.
Check back next week for more "Info from the LVHMC Farms"!

Earth Day Every Day!
Make Recycled Mother's Day Gifts
Need ideas for eco-friendly Mother's Day gifts made from recycled items?
How about turning an old vase or bottle into a terrarium? Something with a wide mouth is easier to plant; place a of layer pea gravel in the bottom and top with some potting soil. Add some small plants and maybe a decorative rock or two.
Another use of recycled glass jars is to turn them into lanterns. Clean and dry the jars, then coat the outside with decopage glue. You can cover the outside with patterned tissue paper or small pieces of colorful tissue paper. Once the jar is covered, paint the paper with another coat of the glue to seal. Wrap some wire around the opening to create a hanger and add a tea light. Make an assortment of colors and sizes for a beautiful display as seen at Canada's Lantern Festival in St. John's. See the photos at: http://thescope.ca/log/bright-light-bright-light
Mom will also enjoy receiving a pillow made from a favorite old sweater, tablecloth or one of her kid's shirts. Or how about decorating an old picture frame with buttons, old jewelry pieces or fabric scraps.
