Hello, Firstname

Wednesday 1 September

We begin the new season with the Chairman's Evening. Ralph says of the evening:
.
A match of two halves as they say.
The first half of the evening will be a look at some of my work:
  • Images from trips I have made to Florida. It will cover a number of different locations and talk about the opportunities (of which there are many)  that are available there.
  • The use of slow shutter speeds and occasionally ICM to capture ‘different’ views of wildlife/events.
  • Mono wildlife images, again trying to create something different from the normal images we see of the subjects.
The second half is my choice to substitute showing any more of my work, for the showing of the NEMPF Mono acceptances.  As their exhibition had such a high entry, and therefore a high number of acceptances it was impossible to show all of their exhibition in one evening.  I personally wanted to see the Mono section and have taken the opportunity available to do so and to share this with the members.

Of course that’s the plan for the first half, but who knows if it will come to fruition

PDI Competition News - Round 1 Closing Date
The closing date for this competition is next Wednesday, 1 September. Recent Newsletters have urged you to check the revised rules now on the club web site as these report a number of rule changes. In summary these change the number of entries allowed; that now all members can submit one of their entries into the prescribed section; and that entries to the prescribed section should carry the letter P, not your class level letter. (Some recent entries have not met the latter requirement, but they do not need to be re-submitted, I can sort them if you have made it clear that the image is for the prescribed section).

Have a go!

Ken Clarke

PDI Competitions Secretary

Last week's article is repeated below:

Competition Time Is here Again!
The new season of BPS bi-monthly competitions is about to begin. The closing date for your entries to PDI Round 1 is Wednesday, 1 September.

Please note that there have been some rule changes, most significantly to the number of permitted entries and to the Prescribed topic element.

The maximum number of images submitted by Intermediate and Advanced entrants will be two, while entry to the Prescribed challenge will be optional and open to all.
  1. Club entrants may submit three images. One of these images may be for the optional Prescribed topic. Points gained for the Prescribed topic will accrue to the entrant’s Club score.
  2. Intermediate entrants may submit two images, one of which may be for the optional Prescribed topic. Points gained for the Prescribed topic will accrue to the entrant’s Intermediate score.
  3. Advanced entrants may submit two images, one of which may be for the optional Prescribed topic. Points gained for the Prescribed topic will accrue to the entrant’s Advanced score.
A separate tally of Prescribed scores will be kept, with awards for the Print and PDI winners at the end of the season.

There will be no printed Handbook this year, so please consult the BPS Website for full details of the rules and instructions how to submit your digital entries.

The Prescribed topic for PDI Round 1 is RED.

‘Chasing the Light’

In this illustrated talk Paul Mitchell FRPS describes how he researches and plans ahead before going on his landscape photography trips at different locations (coast, woodland etc.). He also gives an insight as to what techniques he uses when composing landscapes and the type of landscape images he would make under varying weather conditions.

Born in Yorkshire, England, Paul’s interest in photography started in his teens with a simple 35mm rangefinder camera, and he gained a more formal education in photography whilst studying Graphic Design at Art College. His subsequent career in graphic design paid the mortgage but he never completely lost touch with photography. Over the last two decades his photography has gained momentum and now devotes most of his time lecturing and running photography workshops.

Paul has had numerous exhibitions in the UK and has had articles and images published in many photography magazines. He is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, the current Chair of its Visual Art Panel and also sits on the Landscape Distinctions Panel.

For more information on Paul’s woodland photography autumn workshops visit www.paulmitchellphotography.co.uk/workshops.

Tickets for this online event are free for Digital Imaging members. Everyone is welcome, with tickets for non-members £3. Register now: rps.org/DIGONLINE24

This event will take place via video-conference using Zoom. See the booking page for more information.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

For Sale

If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include it in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).

IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk

The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell us we can't possibly know!
