With
the continued focus on improving the educational outcomes for
African-American high school students, organizers of the Pittsburgh
area’s original tour of Historically Black Colleges and
Universities (HBCU) have scheduled the 2010 spring tour for June
20 - 27, 2010.
The dramatic shift away from the traditional Easter week program
of the past twenty-eight years was made in order to both support
and promote the test preparation of students on the mandated PSSA
statewide achievement tests that will be administered in early
spring. With the adoption of a statewide testing schedule, students
and faculty alike will be preparing in the weeks before Easter
for this important measure of student accomplishment.
According
to program organizers, rescheduling the tour for late spring will
eliminate traditional concerns with students missing school, especially
during the critical weeks leading up to the tests. Additionally,
students will not have the added pressure of completing missed
classroom assignments while on tour, since the new schedule will
have students travel immediately after the close of the school
year. The added flexibility of the new schedule will greatly enhance
the overall experience for participating students in a manner
consistent with the goals set forth by Dr.
Mary L. Stone who founded the program in 1982.
While
the timing has changed, qualified high school juniors and sophomores
will enjoy an expanded tour program that includes visits to twelve
HBCU campuses along with three significant historical sites. Other
key aspects of the program will remain unchanged as tour participants
will visit campuses to be met by representatives from the admissions
office and undergraduates from the universities visited.
The
application deadline for the 2010 tour is March 1, 2010.
