Urban Tellers : Against All Odds
It seems like everyone these days is a big fan of The Moth, but did you know that Portland has its own version? Authentic, home-grown, very Portland. It's Portland Story Theater's Urban Tellers. If you've never seen one of Portland Story Theater’s Urban Tellers shows, you are in for a transformative and soul-satisfying experience. Urban Tellers is the showcase that culminates PST's ongoing Art of Personal Narrative workshops. They take six ordinary people from different walks of life and help them discover, shape, craft and deliver their true personal stories.

On July 15th the latest group of Urban Tellers will perform at Hipbone Studio. It's the last show of the season, so come on down and get your story fix before they break for the summer. Make your reservations sooner rather than later -- these events usually fill up quickly.

  • The Storytellers: Roy Staples, Jake Sullivan, Niko Moe, Lacey Mulford, Ryan Harter, Jack Schwab
  • When: Friday, July 15 at 8:00 pm (door opens at 7:30 pm)
  • Where: Hipbone Studio 1847 E Burnside (at NE 18 Avenue) in Portland, Oregon
  • Admission: $10
  • Reservations:    Call 503.793.5484 or email reservations@portlandstorytheater.com

These workshops do not start out with a theme - each participant discovers the story that needs to be told. Themes emerge as the workshop unfolds, and this time the theme seems to be "against all odds." The son of a truck driver fulfills his life-long dream of graduating from college -- against all odds. A young woman keeps the promise she made to her grandfather -- against all odds. Two brothers become friends -- against all odds.

Urban Tellers will be held at Hipbone Studio, 1847 E Burnside. Starting at 7:30 p.m. Wine, beer and soft drinks will be available for purchase before the event, and the storytelling will begin at 8 p.m.

Founded by a boy from Brooklyn, Lawrence Howard, and native Oregonian, Lynne Duddy, Portland Story Theater's Urban Tellers is fast becoming the go-to destination for an evening of intimate stories that illuminate the universal through the personal. For more information on Portland Story Theater, visit http://www.portlandstorytheater.com

Portlanders are passionate about stories. And live theater, and shared experiences. Portland Story Theater shares this passion. We use a unique collaborative approach to produce shows where people perform stories drawn from real-life experiences. We also offer workshops and one-on-one coaching for people who want to learn how to tell personal narratives. Portland Story Theater is driven by our core values: We are stewards of the oral tradition and authentic performances, we are catalysts for community relationships and alliances, and we are advocates for diverse narrative artists and the loyal audience that supports our work. Portland Story Theater offers six programs to promote the narrative arts.
