Issue #11, February 4, 2002

EDITOR'S EYE

Dear Social Work Colleagues,

Welcome to Issue #11 of the Social Work E-News.

I have received so many wonderful letters from the newsletter's readers, and it's a delight to correspond with social workers from around the world. The Social Work E-News now has over 5,800 subscribers, including social work students, practitioners, educators, and others interested in the profession.

I would like to address a few questions I've received about this newsletter. Some subscribers have asked if this newsletter is the same as THE NEW SOCIAL WORKER magazine. THE NEW SOCIAL WORKER is a separate publication from this newsletter. THE NEW SOCIAL WORKER is a printed, quarterly magazine that is mailed to subscribers in January, April, July, and October. The magazine, geared toward social work students and recent graduates, has been in existence since 1994 and focuses on social work careers. You can find information about subscribing at <http://www.socialworker.com/subrates.htm>. There is also an electronic edition, which you can read about later in this newsletter.

The newsletter you are reading right now, THE NEW SOCIAL WORKER'S Social Work E-News, was started in 2001. It is free, and is delivered only by e-mail. There is an archive of back issues, available at <http://www.yourmailinglistprovider.com/pubarchive.php?lindagwhc>. The Social Work E-News consists of social work news, feature articles, job listings, and other bits of information of interest to social workers. It continues to grow and evolve with each new issue.

Some people have asked me about the subscription process for the Social Work E-News. This has changed a couple of times since the newsletter's inception, as we were searching for an efficient system that had the features needed for the newsletter. Currently (and for the foreseeable future), we are using a mailing service provider that handles this process outside of our main site. When you subscribed, you were taken to a Web page that confirmed your subscription, and it contained an ad of some sort, most likely not having much (or anything) to do with social work. This has confused some people.

The mailing service provider is able to provide a high-quality service by selling advertisements on its confirmation pages. These ads are not on our server, but on that of the service provider. Unfortunately, I have no control over the content of these ads. If I could pay the provider a fee to remove the ads, I would, but this is not offered as an option.

Please rest assured that once your subscription has been confirmed, your e-mail address is ONLY used by me, to send you this newsletter, and possibly an occasional update about our Web site or publications (social work-related). Your subscription to this newsletter will not result in your being sent any e-mail or ads that you did not sign up for.

Now, on to the social work news.... :-)

FEATURE ARTICLE

CELEBRATE SOCIAL WORK AROUND THE WORLD

Next month marks Professional Social Work Month in the U.S. The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) coordinates efforts among its state chapters and provides materials at its Web site (http://www.socialworkers.org) for those who want to do something special during the month of March to celebrate the profession and educate the public about it. This year's Social Work Month theme is "The Power of Social Work."

Social Work Month celebrations vary widely. In Clarksville, TN, the NASW satellite unit is preparing to send press releases to local and college newspapers to share the history and contributions of social workers. Monica Causey, a subscriber to the Social Work E-News, reports, "We live in a community that does not value social workers. Our group organized to begin to educate the community and in particular the professional community on the value of social workers. So this is a 'grand' step for people juggling commutes, families, high caseloads, placements, and school."

Another reader, Carolyn Preston, reports that in Canada, a week is devoted to social work. Social Work Week is celebrated during the third week of March. In the hospital where Preston works, for example, the social work department is hosting a workshop during the week before Social Work Week. Last year, the hospital did a display in a public area "about all the great things that social workers in the hospital do." They also had a social worker/author do a book signing, and the social workers had a luncheon. Preston also reports that the Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW) publishes a poster for Social Work Week. See CASW's Web site at http://www.casw-acts.ca for more information on this year's Social Work Week, the theme of which is "Social Work for Social Justice."

July 26 is Social Worker Day in Peru, according to Maria Rose Torre, another reader. "We celebrate it with academic events and social meetings for sharing our experiences," says Torre. There are about 9,000 registered social workers in Peru.

Regardless of whether you are celebrating Social Work Month, Day, or Week, and regardless of where you are celebrating, here are a few ideas to consider:

1. Host a workshop or inservice training for other professionals in your work setting.

2. Contact the local newspapers to run a story about social workers in general, or about a particular program that your agency offers, or about a particular social worker who is doing something "special" in your community.

3. Book an interview on a local talk radio show or TV news show. Smaller stations are looking for good guests. Find a local news angle, and contact them with your interview idea.

3. Decorate the halls in your agency with social work posters or information about the agency's social work services.

4. Develop a brochure that explains the agency's social work services.

5. Get social work t-shirts made for the social workers in the agency and wear them on a specified day.

6. Wear "I Am a Social Worker" buttons (see http://www.socialworker.com/buttons.htm for info on ordering), available from the publisher of this newsletter. (Hint: If you need a large quantity of these buttons, please let us know AS SOON AS POSSIBLE--we may need to have more made, and Social Work Month is sooner than you think!)

7. Check the NASW Web site for a Social Work Month kit and other information and ideas. See <http://www.socialworkers.org/resources/sw_month/default.htm>.)
