And we're back...
BIG NEWS DEPT. - The long-awaited Los Manatees studio CD has finally reached the finish line. Guest-starring Little Feat's drummer, Alicia Key's percussionist, and Bob Marley's guitarist, the album features eight original songs. 3 years in the making! All that's left to do is the mastering and cover artwork.
You should come out and celebrate the completion of our work on the new CD at Crazy Carl's next Wed., Nov. 21 (Thanksgiving's Eve). Opening up for us downstairs will be the young & up-and-coming reggae/rock band "Three-Legged Fox". There will be two bands playing upstairs including "Spring City Ballet". It's one of the biggest nights of the year!
Manatee Fun Fact: Did you know that O.J. Simpson
once hit a manatee with a motor boat? It's true!
This Sunday, Nov. 18, we will be playing the Cathy Gilday Benefit Concert at Jokers in Philadelphia, PA. Cathy is drummer Richie DeCarlo's sister-in-law. She was seriously injured in a car accident. Seven of the area's top bands will be volunteering their time and talents. Performers including LeCompt, Split Decision, and Crystal Roxx. The music starts at 6:00. Tickets are $10 and includes a buffet. There will be an all-star jam at the end of this show as well as auctions throughout the evening. Come early and check out all the acts.
NEW YEAR'S EVE DEPT. - This Dec.31st, we will be ringing in the new year at The Inn at Towamencin-Best Western (1750 Sumneytown Pike, Kulpsville, PA 19443 215-368-3800). It's right there when you get off of the Northeast Extension in Lansdale and go left. They have several packages and rooms are available. Reservations required. Celebrate - The start of 08!
Manatee Fun Fact:
Did you know that one of Jim Henson's puppets is named
"Rizzo"? It's true! (Just like our own Jozo.)
He's a main character in one of those pirate muppet movies.
Occasional Manatees percussionist Tom Mussleman has created our latest poster. You may see one on the wall at one of our shows but please try to resist the temptation to grab one for yourself. Just ask us. Tom has also designed some righteous Rasta T-shirts.
The song, "On My Way", from my "Southpaw" solo album, has been selected to be included on Volume 2 of The Lehigh Valley Music Awards CD. This year's release is in honor of The Funhouse in Bethlehem, PA. a club which has been supporting original live music for many years. Among the artists also appearing on this compilation is Todd Wolfe, Jesse Rivera, and 39 Goodbyes. Hats off to Tina & Chris and the whole Funhouse staff!(The Lehigh Valley Music Awards are being held on Wed., Dec.12, at The Meadows in Hellertown, PA.)
Last week the band went on a rare road trip. We drove up north through awesome autumn foliage to Montrose, PA, situated high in the Endless Mountains. It is a one-traffic-light town. It was snowing. We were playing a two-night school benefit at the local firehouse. There were some cool T-shirts printed up for the shows. A vicious German shepherd was chained outside our hotel entrance. We didn't really trash the hotel rooms like we used to (but Randy did throw a TV Guide out the window). They say they'll have us back next year.
Manatee Fun Fact: Did you know that David
Bromberg and Ranger Will have the same birthday? It's true!
(Sept. 19) Manatees vocalist Kathleen Weber sings with both
men.
MORE BIG NEWS DEPT. - There has been some serious talk recently about retiring the "Los Manatees" name at the end of the year and continuing on in 2008 as "The Medicine Brothers". A lot of things have changed since the original inception of the "Manatees" (which was initially coined to describe a mid-eighties computerized duo). Some of us feel we have moved past this name. "The Medicine Brothers" is a name that we’ve used to describe our acoustic side gigs. Perhaps now this name can be expanded to encompass the whole band and signal a new direction. We may even release the new CD under "The Medicine Brothers" banner. Bold moves indeed! (Of course Los Manatees would always be available for reunions and special events.) The debate continues…
Well that is certainly enough for now.
Have a happy and healthy Thanksgiving
.Jah love, everyone!
