Next Wednesday we have a visit from Ross McKelvey MPAGB EFIAP/s FIPF FBPE, from Northern Ireland, who will be presenting his talk called Passion for Prints - this is a display of award winning exhibition prints from National and International Competitions, as well as Distinction Panel images, complemented by plenty of information on shooting tips, processing and printing. This will demonstrate his journey from camera club journeyman to LRPS and finally to MPAGB, with plenty of advice, anecdotes and information in between! Designed to inspire club members on to greater things...!
Ross is best known for his portraiture and has been very successful as an international exhibitor, gaining many acceptances and awards. Indeed, so successful has he become that, in an effort to stop him winning gongs at Bristol, we have asked him to be one of the judges for next year's Salon.

Below are a couple of Ross's portraits. See more about Ross & his images by visiting his website |
The DI Group meets for its monthly meeting on Monday (8 May, 7.30 - 9.30pm) and as usual all members are welcome. This time, as Ashwin is away sunning himself in India, the meeting will be run by Lee Spencer-Fleet, ably aided and abetted by Mike Bigger on computer. Members are invited to bring along pictures for general discussion, to show off or to get help from the assembled masses with a particular problem – Lee is particularly keen to encourage any newcomers to the club to use this opportunity to check how their digital images project on the larger screen, in preparation for joining in club competitions. Experienced club members will be on hand to give constructive feedback in a friendly (judgment-free) environment! There's no need to panic about your beloved leader being away, as I'm assured that Ashwin has left a cache of biscuits hidden away for the evening. |
Advanced warning, the closing date for the Annual Print Competition is just two weeks away - 17 May; the judge for this year's competition will be Jenny Hibbert MPAGB AFIAP AWPF from South Wales.
Full entry details can be found in your Members Handbook (pp25 & 28), but if you have any queries or need labels for your prints, I'm sure that David Alderson will be only too pleased to help - either collar him at next week's meeting or email him at printcompetitions@bristolphoto.org.uk.
Entries should be put in the at the front of the meeting room. |
Bi-Monthly Print Competition - Changes
|
The results of the consultation about the competition were discussed at the last Council Meeting. It was decided to implement changes that will add a thematic or genre element (for example street photography or monochrome) to each round of the PI and Print competitions. This should introduce a fresh element of challenge and allow members an opportunity to make an entry which better reflects their particular interests or skills. The details of how this will be implemented are to be considered and approved by the Council. The Council decided that there will be no introduction of a “Winners” or “Premier” group to the present Advanced level in the coming year, but that this may be reconsidered after the proposed change has been tried.

Nick is organising an outing to Taunton Speedway on Friday 2 June.

6pm when there will be a tour of the pits and track. There will then be
buffet meal and an opportunity to adjust camera settings in the lighting
prior to the start of racing. The Speedway charge is £170 for a party

ITS NOT PARTICULARLY EASY FINDING "DATES FOR YOUR DIARY", SO I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT IF MEMBERS COULD LET ME KNOW OF ANY EVENTS, EXHIBITIONS OR PICTURE LOCATIONS THAT THEY THINK WOULD BE OF INTEREST. DATES AND WEB LINKS WOULD HELP.
|
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers
of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't
include them all. So please only advise of awards or other
milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
|
If
you have something photographic that you want to sell, let me have the
details and I will circulate them to a captive audience of photographers
through the Newsletter - send to the usual address. |
Would all members please note: before you plan your shoot and book your model, you should check whether the studio/clubroom will be free. This can be done easily and at any time by viewing the Clubroom Bookings calendar in the Members' Area of the BPS Website. Bookings can (and must) be made by contacting Mike Bigger at bookings@bristolphoto.org.uk.
Log in details to the Members' Area are at the end of this newsletter.

For those of you who aren't sure what MPAGB, EFIAP/s and many more such seemingly random collections of letters mean, just click here to download the list. |
