PDI Competition - Round 4 Closing Date
Last Wednesday our illustrious leader, Ralph, announced to all and sundry that the closing date for Round 4 of the PDI Competion was next Wednesday 17 February. This was a slight mistake as the date is actually the following week, 24 February. The judge for this round will be Michael Krier ARPS MA(Photography) and the theme for the Advanced section is Edge/Boundaries.

DPIC 2021
The following report is from our External Competions Secretary, Mike Martin:

DPIC – Winners!
I'm absolutely chuffed to report that BPS comprehensively won this year’s DPIC with a score of 226 (18 images), beating runners up Dorchester by a full 11 points, the biggest winning margin I can remember.

Huge thanks to my co-selectors, Barry and Ralph, but credit really goes to everyone whose images we had to chose from – a real club team effort.

However, special congratulations are due to the following:
  • Barry Mead – Survivor... Ron Whelans’ Selector’s award
  • Sue O’Connell – Little Goatherder – Silver
  • David Alderson – Old Railwayman – HC
  • Graham Pears – Buzzard Feeding  - HC
  • Rachel Domleo – Guardians of the Forest – HC

Below are the successful BPS images:

Bristol Salon 2021
This year’s Salon saw a massive turn around in entry numbers, following several years of declining entry numbers we ended up with a 50% increase on our 2020 entry. This, I’m sure, is partly due to the Covid effect – we had to drop prints this year for obvious reasons and replace them with PDIs which always attract more entries and the fact that much of the world has had little to do during lockdowns and has therefore turned (in some quarters) to entering competitions/exhibitions to help relieve the boredom. In total we received a massive 12,690 images with over half of those arriving in the final week. The good news is that a record number of 47 BPS members entered, with 28 of those being successful in obtaining acceptances and 7 HMs being awarded to members. To those who were successful, well done, to those who didn’t quite manage to get an acceptance, don’t be too downhearted, only 24% of submissions were accepted this year, so look at it this way, for every 4 images submitted, 3 were rejected – and that applied to some of the top photographers in the world.

Reproduced below is a list of the BPS successes:

‘Creating Impactful Images’
David Clapp presents a new and exciting talk about how to tune your photographic concepts to get you creating your very strongest and impactful images this year. With everything from architecture to landscape, infrared to travel photography, this animated presentation is for everyone. David will teach the intricacies of composition, of image subtlety, as well as how to work faster and more effectively to create portfolios of an enviable standard using an approach ranging from technical to artistic. There will be an opportunity for questions after the presentation.
David Clapp FRPS is a successful working landscape, travel and architectural photographer. A jack of all trades, he initially began working as a writer, contributing imagery and words for photography magazines. This led to a career as a full-time professional photographer in 2009. He is a Getty Images contributor and a technical specialist with Canon UK, representing Canon at events and trade shows, holding inspirational talks and running customer events alongside Canon staff. His workshops take photographers to some of the most exciting locations on the planet – recent destinations include Namibia, Norway, India, Death Valley, Arizona, Iceland and more. David now sits on the RPS Travel Distinctions panel.
Tickets for this online event are free for Digital Imaging members. But everyone is welcome, with tickets for non-members £3. Register now: https://rps.org/DIGONLINE15/.
This event will take place via video-conference using Zoom. See the booking page for more information.

I have received this sad news from Barry.
Mike Birbeck from Taunton CC has sadly passed away. He had been unwell for a while. He was an inspiration to all who knew him despite being wheelchair bound.

Masters of Print Competition - Closing Date Looms!
Keep the files coming.

There is no panic at the moment if you are still deciding on which of your award winning images to enter.  You have until 24 Feb to email me the files.  I am also planning to make the 24th the print pick up date - probably from outside the club rooms at 10:00am.  I will confirm this

I will also collect entry fees on the 24th - £3 per print entered

I will then label them, pay the entry fee and get them off to the Comp Secretary.

Still time if you want to join in with Team MOP!

Steve

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Make Money For BPS Every Time You Shop On Amazon!

Click on the link below – then it’s self-explanatory.
Shopping using Smile is no different to your normal Amazon shopping and costs you nothing, it's just that you need to tell it that you wish to use Smile and then we get some pennies!
