Competition News - Including Rule Changes
It's well worth repeating the following item, as it contains very important information on competition rule changes.
Competition Time Is here Again!
The new season of BPS bi-monthly competitions is about to begin. The closing date for your entries to PDI Round 1 is Wednesday, 1 September.

Please note that there have been some rule changes, most significantly to the number of permitted entries and to the Prescribed topic element.

The maximum number of images submitted by Intermediate and Advanced entrants will be two, while entry to the Prescribed challenge will be optional and open to all.
  1. Club entrants may submit three images. One of these images may be for the optional Prescribed topic. Points gained for the Prescribed topic will accrue to the entrant’s Club score.
  2. Intermediate entrants may submit two images, one of which may be for the optional Prescribed topic. Points gained for the Prescribed topic will accrue to the entrant’s Intermediate score.
  3. Advanced entrants may submit two images, one of which may be for the optional Prescribed topic. Points gained for the Prescribed topic will accrue to the entrant’s Advanced score.
A separate tally of Prescribed scores will be kept, with awards for the Print and PDI winners at the end of the season.

There will be no printed Handbook this year, so please consult the BPS Website for full details of the rules and instructions how to submit your digital entries.

The Prescribed topic for PDI Round 1 is RED.

Masters of Print
Just when we thought we could draw breathe, The Masters of Print is back.
Steve Field is willing, again, to act as the coordinator for a Club Entry.
For those of you who didn’t get accepted last time, don’t get disheartened. Unlike FIAP/BPE salons, the exhibition only accepts 60 images rather than a percentage and ordinarily no more than one per person. Gaining a print acceptance is a real accolade we should all strive for. Indeed, in 2019 BPS was the most successful club in the UK with five acceptances!
Whilst we didn’t match that in the deferred 2020 exhibition earlier this year (two accepted prints; by Barry Mead and Sandie Cox) we topped the club entry by some considerable margin cementing our status as one of the top clubs in the country, as evidenced by our position in the WCPF rankings and PAGB Inter-Club results.

Let’s see if we can do so again in the 2021 submission.
Note: this exhibition is for new work (see 2.3 below) so for any less experienced printers or those not accustomed with inter-club competitions and salons, help is at hand for anyone wanting assistance selecting images or how to realise their full potential. Just send up to 10-15 of your best images to Mike Martin and he’ll liaise with a few stalwarts within the club to get you some constructive critique and guidance. Whilst this is still no guarantee of acceptance, you’ve got nothing to lose; at worst, you may end up with a great print for the quarterly or annual competitions!
When asked why do this? Mike declared he has a vested interest in your success – whilst he’d be more than happy to assist anyone ‘up their game’, doing so greatly helps him by increasing the pool of images he can select from for future external competitions. This is a real WIN/WIN situation – so what have you got to lose – get involved.

We have reproduced the key information from the MOP website below but please visit http://www.thepagb.org.uk/competitions/pagb-masters-of-print/ for full info.
Entry is £3 per entry as last year with a maximum 5 images per photographer in Mono, Colour or Nature or any mix.
As usual, please fill Steve Field’s email progsec@bristolphoto.org.uk with those of you that would like to have a go, Steve promises not to be a bully!

TIMETABLE
Closing Date Online 08 Oct 2021
Receipt of Prints by 15 Oct 2021
Judging 23 Oct 2021
Grand Opening 04 Dec 2021
2.3 Images
We are seeking unfamiliar work and not images which already have an exhibition history. Therefore, no image may be entered which has been previously seen in a Federation or PAGB event or has been published in an exhibition catalogue including a DVD or on-line catalogue and is not eligible if it has been accepted previously in any category of any previous masters of print Competition. Images which have only been seen inside the Entrant’s Club or in local inter-Club competitions are eligible. An Image by a Photographer, or an Image so similar as to be nearly identical, may only be entered into one of the Categories.
2.4 Prints
Prints must be on A3 paper (420x297mm) and unmounted, with the Image any size or shape. Darkroom prints are permitted but should be trimmed to 420x297mm. Larger or smaller prints, including A3+ and 16”x12”, risk being disqualified without return of entry fee. Prints will not be returned. The Organisers will be responsible for mounting and framing the selected Exhibition Prints. The Exhibition will be displayed in 60x60cm frames, using neutral mounts.
2.5 Image Files
An Image file is required for each Print entered. The Image size must be 2400 pixels on the longer side, whether horizontal or vertical. This image size, which is larger than usual, is required for publication in the Catalogue. Image files must be in RGB mode (even for monochrome images) and in the AdobeRGB colour space. Files must be saved in JPEG format at quality 10 (80%). An Image file larger than 3MB, will not upload.

Club Awards
Club Entrants will accrue points, and Individual Entrants will accrue points to their Club
· 1 point for every Print entered, plus
· 3 points for every Print scored 13 or over by the Judges, plus
· 5 points for every Print accepted into the Exhibition.
Club Awards will be based on the order of merit of total points accrued.
· A Gold Medal will be awarded.

Word Of Warning For MAC Users!
I have received the following from David Grierson:

I recently had issues with my new M1 Mac mini, where I couldn’t load apps that were written for the old Intel chip. Adobe apps load Rosetta automatically but SkyGo as an example doesn’t.
I followed the info below to get the app to work on my mac.
Other members may be interested as Apple say there are many apps that don’t load Rosetta automatically
Which of your apps need Rosetta?
You can use Get Info to identify apps that need Rosetta or can use Rosetta:
  1. Select the app in the Finder.
  2. From the File menu in the menu bar, choose Get Info
  3. View the information labelled Kind:
  • Application (Intel) means the app only supports Intel processors and needs Rosetta to work on any Mac with Apple silicon.
  • Application (Universal) means the app supports both Apple silicon and Intelprocessors, and uses Apple silicon by default.
The Info window for universal apps includes the setting “Open using Rosetta”. It enables email apps, web browsers and other apps to use add-ons that haven't been updated to support Apple silicon. If an app doesn't recognise a plug-in, extension or other add-on, quit the app, select this setting and try again.

David tells me that, following years of trouble with his right leg, he has finally had it amputated below the knee - I'm sure that you'll all join me in wishing David well in his recovery and that his future holds brighter news.

Amateur Photographer Of The Year
Following on from an item in Issue 446 about the AP Amateur Photographer of the Year competition; Mike Martin is still looking for members to join him in this competition. At present Mike is a lone entrant from BPS and is flying our flag in joint 3rd place, but is sure that if we had more members join him that we would be fighting for 1st place and that all important £500 prize for club funds.

Details can be found here – or simply ask Mike - mike_martin@blueyonder.co.uk

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
