Hello Firstname

AGM - Wednesday 4 July
The BPS AGM takes place on Wednesday 4 July. In accordance with the Society's rules, please find attached to this newsletter the following;
  • Notice of the thirty-second Annual General Meeting of the Society
  • Nomination form for the Office of Member of Council of BPS
  • Proxy voting form

Wednesday 20 June
Next Wednesday we welcome John P Davey FRPS who will be presenting an evening called The Theatre of Elegance. The presentation consists entirely of Black and White Darkroom prints, the majority toned in various colours of Sepia, Brown, Ochre, Selenium, Olive, Gold and occasionally Blue. The subject matter for "The Theatre of Elegance" was intended to consist of Dance, Fashion, Fine Art Nudes and supplemented with old Architecture such as the Acropolis at Athens, The Taj Mahal, Venice etc, in short, all subjects that John finds fascinating and beautiful.
John began photography in 1982, went on several photographic holidays including one to India in1993 with Bob Moore who was president elect of the RPS at that time he got to know Brian Cheer and Geoff Nash of Kingswood Club and was persuaded to join a camera club on his return home to Launceston. The first guest speaker John saw was David Penprase FRPS and his printing just took the wind of John's sails and he immediately knew that he had to learn to print and tone black and whites.  He joined the RPS in 1998 with an LRPS via six distinctions in City & Guilds, gained Associates in visual art and portraiture in 1999 and a Fellowship in portraiture in 2000.

I asked John for images to illustrate this short item and received the following note:
"As I have nothing on file I rephotographed three of my prints on my wife's small digital Sony and hope this will be ok."

Wednesday 27 June
This sees the President's Cup and Garmston Bowl competitions, which this year are being judged by Colin Harrison FRPS MPAGB EFIAP/d1 FBPE.

Next Week
Would members please note, there will be no newsletter next week as I will be away. Normal service will resume on 29 June.

Situations Vacant
Last Wednesday I announced at club that Carol and I will be resigning from the posts of Salon Secretary and Salon Chairman respectively after the 2019 Salon and asked for volunteers to fill our shoes. As explained on Wednesday, we have held these posts since 2005, so felt that it was time for a break. Since the Salon went digital we have always maintained that the jobs done by the pair of us could not be split which has meant that for the last 13 years we have carried much of the burden of running the Salon between the two of us. When we discussed giving up, we decided to look at what we do and to see if it would be possible to split the job of running the Salon into bite sized chunks, thus making it such that many people could be involved, all doing what they felt they could handle. The upshot of this is that we are looking for someone to take overall charge plus a group of willing volunteers. These people would not be expected to jump in at the deep end without any water-wings as we don't propose giving up until after the end of next year's Salon and those volunteers would merely be shadowing Carol and me over the next year or so, getting ready to take over for the 2020 Salon. I have prepared a chart/job description showing what is (loosely) involved and the approximate timescale of each task, so if you are interested you can download it by following this link.
It is imperative that we find volunteers as the Salon is crucial to the running of BPS, both financially and from the point of view of prestige. Bristol is known the world over for its international exhibition, this is evidenced by the fact that when prospective judges are approached with a view to judging at Bristol, they bite my hand off to say yes, in many cases cancelling other engagements to take up our invitation. It is also notable that whilst entries for other international exhibitions (in the UK) are dropping like a stone, we are continuing to maintain our entry numbers.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or want something explained, but I fully expect my in-box to bursting at the seams with emails from volunteers rushing to take the best jobs.

Studio Group Competition
The studio competition will be for images taken during any of the studio group meetings that have taken place in the 12 months ending 31 May 2018. Any member who has attended these sessions can submit up to four images which they should rank in order of their preference for being entered in the competition. The images should be sent in an email with 'Studio Competition' in the subject line to: competitions@bristolphoto.org.uk by midnight on 24 June and should follow the normal rules for projected image competitions i.e.:
1.  If you do not receive a Submission Report, this may mean your images have not been received.
2. Submissions can only be made by email and are not accepted on the night and cannot be made by CD, flash drive or memory stick.
3. Please be aware that the images are handled automatically once loaded into the competition software and the software will reject incorrect images (too large or wrong naming pattern).
4.  Images must not be greater than 1400 pixels wide and 1050 pixels high - Note that Portrait format images must not be more than 1050 pixels high.
5.  Save the images as a JPG using the highest quality. (Other file types such as TIFF or PSD will not be accepted).
6.  The projector uses the sRGB colour space and hence you should save the images using the sRGB colour profile. Other profiles (such as Adobe98 or ProPhoto) may result in incorrect display of the image.
7. Name each file you enter in the following pattern. For example: 01_Alexandrea_296S.jpg
•    01, 02, 03, etc. to show order of preference
•    underscore (not a hyphen)
•  Title of the image (which can contain spaces and hyphens but must not contain underscore)
•      underscore (not a hyphen)
•    Your Membership Number (shown on this newsletter) followed without a space by the letter S.
The images will be shown randomly in pairs following the AGM on the 4 July and all present will vote on them on a knockout basis until we have an overall winner who will be presented with the studio trophy.
If you’ve enjoyed a studio group meeting please support this new competition, it is a great chance both for the experienced members and for those new to competitions to try their hand.

Cups - Last Call!
As the AGM draws ever closer, so does the time for all cup holders to return their cups, so please let Keith Wood have them at any Wednesday meeting between now and the end of June.

Monday July 23rd: Producing B and W images in Lightroom.

The following is from BTW leader, David Grierson:

YouTube: Many members have mentioned certain names who have great learning sites on YouTube. What I’d like to create is a database of these names so we can all benefit.
A couple I use are:
  • Anthony Morganti - click here
  • Photos in colour - click here
Please email your “go to” sites to mail@dgrierson.co.uk and I’ll publish the results.

Following on from the recent talk on mount cutters by Longridge, they have now written to say that members can get a discount on the cutters, however to get this discount, orders will have to be placed over the phone, quoting Bristol Photographic Society and Chris Longridge.

LCE Leica Workshop - Street Photography
Join Leica Akademie Ambassador and tutor, Robin Sinha on a photo walk of picturesque, Bristol.
Aimed at existing and aspiring Leica owners, this hands-on workshop offers the chance to discover more about the Leica range, whilst shooting quintessentially Leica street photography.
Learn how to spot the potential for great photography on the street whilst overcoming the fear of getting up close and personal.
Following an initial introduction and discussion on approaches to street photography, Robin will lead a walk through Bristol city centre, providing on the go guidance. Attendees are requested to bring along four street images (either on pen drive or SD card) that they are most proud of for a discussion at the start of the workshop.
The workshop will conclude with a critique of images captured and a Q&A session.

100km - He Must Be mad!
I have received the following from BPS member, Phil Weston:

I would not normally write to BPS requesting charity donations. However, I believe the following is a particularly deserving cause.
Some of you may be aware that I intend to stretch my leg muscles on Saturday 30 June with the small matter of a 100km walk along the Cotswold Way from Bath to Cheltenham.
In old money, that equates to 62 miles and the intent is to complete the challenge non-stop (food / rest stops excepted) within 26-30 hours.
I will be walking with colleagues from work, Thornbury Community Services, and our simple objective is to raise as much money as possible for a fabulous children's charity called 'Magic Moments'.
They are dedicated to helping children with life-limiting illnesses and their families. Typically, they achieve this by sending children from their supported hospices and their families on trips to Disneyland Paris.
Our company has its own Just Giving page and if you wish to donate could I please encourage you to do so via the link immediately below. Feel free to gift aid as well if appropriate.

If you are kind enough to donate could I please just request that you mention Phil within your message. That way, we can track who people are sponsoring.
Thank you for reading this far and should you choose to donate may I express my sincere thanks.

Kind regards
Phil Weston

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Studio Bookings
Would all members please note: before you plan your shoot and book your model, you should check whether the studio/clubroom will be free. This can be done easily and at any time by viewing the Clubroom Bookings calendar in the Members' Area of the BPS Website. Bookings can (and must) be made by contacting Mike Bigger at bookings@bristolphoto.org.uk.
Log in details to the Members' Area are at the end of this newsletter.

Items For Sale
Please note, we can only carry adverts for items to sell if those items actually belong to the member advertising them.

If you have something photographic that you want to sell, let me have the details and I will circulate them to a captive audience of photographers through the Newsletter - send to the usual address.

Photographic Acronyms
For those of you who aren't sure what MPAGB, EFIAP/s and many more such seemingly random collections of letters mean, just click here to download the list.

Personal Detail Changes
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk
The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, if they are wrong, please let Carol know.
