Urban Tellers : Paradigm Shift

It may be one of Portland’s best kept secrets but, like DC’s Speakeasy or NYC’s The Moth, Portland has Urban Tellers. If you've never seen Portland Story Theater’s Urban Tellers in action, you simply must. The experience is profound, and on June 25 the latest group of Urban Tellers is performing at Hipbone Studio. We recommend making a reservation now because these events usually fill up quickly.

Saturday, June 25
8:00 pm (door opens at 7:30 pm)
Hipbone Studio
1847 E Burnside (at NE 18 Avenue)
Portland, OR 97214
Admission: $10
Reservations: Call 503.793.5484 or email reservations@portlandstorytheater.com

Among the storytellers is Aiyana Cunningham, who describes herself as a community builder and does Community Outreach for Portland Playhouse.  She sees the work that Portland Story Theater is doing as “a real community building thing. Sometimes you see someone and maybe you can't remember their name, but you remember their story, and because of it, already you can relate to them at a deeper level. It is a more meaningful way to interact with people instead of scratching around the surface telling each other our names and what we do while scrambling around for a common interest which often goes in one ear and out the other.”

It’s those meaningful interactions that Urban Tellers is all about. The showcase is the culmination of collaborative sessions of The Art of Personal Narrative workshop. The stories that emerge during the process typically have strong emotional themes. This time it’s all about those events in our lives that cause a Paradigm Shift.

For example, Aiyana’s personal narrative gives us a glimpse into the world of homelessness and the prison system. Jeff Burke, Head Honcho over at Hipbone, tells of an accident that transformed his view of the world. Other storytellers include Russell Young of Studio 3024, funding guru Lynn Fitch, Ken Kesey scholar Andrew Bynum and Marci McReynolds of Listening Planet

Urban Tellers will be held at Hipbone Studio, 1847 E Burnside. Starting at 7:30 p.m. Wine, beer and soft drinks will be available for purchase before the event, and the storytelling will begin at 8 p.m.

Founded by a boy from Brooklyn, Lawrence Howard, native Oregonian, Lynne Duddy, Portland Story Theater’s Urban Tellers is an evening of ordinary people telling their true personal stories. Urban Tellers has grown in popularity and this will be the sixth showcase this season. For more information on Portland Story Theater, visit http://www.portlandstorytheater.com
