Ranger Report Tuesday Feb. 24 (Mardi Gras)

"I like to play with people who can play simple and are not threatened by other musicians thinking they can't play. And that eliminates 99 per cent of the musicians" - Neil Young

In about an hour I'll be heading out the door for our Mardi Gras show at The Dutch Cottage. That gives me just enough time to type up this latest dispatch.
Earlier this month, Manatee bassist/vocalist Randy Wagner got a chance to hang out with the legendary Patti LaBelle at the A To Z Recording Studio on Locust St. in Philadelphia. Randy was there with Manatee producer David Ivory who has worked with Patti in the past and is producing one of the songs on her new album. Randy said she hit a few notes that raised the hair on the back of his neck. (Photo of Randy and Patti not available at press time.)
Later that same week, Uncle Ronkle and I drove up to New Hope to see a 2-hour video tribute to Bob Marley hosted by noted reggae scholar Roger Steffens. Roger and I had corresponded through e-mail but never met in person. All of the footage was rare and unreleased including Marley's legendary performance at Harvard (which raised the hair on the back of my own neck a couple of times.) After the show I got a chance to hang with Roger and give him some Manatee CDs. (Photo of Will and Roger not available at press time)
Randy, Ted The Fiddler and I performed with Ray Adkins as the opening act for Jasmine's CD release party at The Point in Bryn Mawr. Ray has written a bunch of new songs and was debuting a few of them that night. Could a new solo CD be far off? After Ray, Jasmine and her musicians played a soothing set featuring cuts off her new solo CD. After her well-received show she proceeded to sell almost a hundred autographed copies of her album right there in the club!
And speaking of Ted, some of you may have seen a broadcast of Ted's December birthday show at the Colonial Theater last week on PBS (Channel 35 WYBE).
Manatee friend/lyricist/promoter Brian Hassett recently lost his father. He is moving from New York up to Toronto to care for his ailing mother. Brian is doing a farewell show at The Back Fence on Bleeker St. in Greenwich Village, New York this Sunday afternoon. On behalf of everyone here at Manatee Headquarters, we send Brian our deepest condolences.
On a somewhat lighter note, this Friday at Crazy Carl's we will be celebrating our Manatee merchandise maiden Cherri's birthday!
Coming up in March: St. Patrick's Day, and The First Day Of Spring!!!
And now here is your song-of-the-month:

Father's Day- key of E- words and music-W. Hodgson

Telling you the truth before you hear the lie
Takes away your fear before he hears your cry
On your way under He is underway
Since before you were small, He's been giving it all away
    Thinkin' 'bout it yesterday
I just wanna say- this is our Father's day
Every seventh day- it is our Father's day
The One that came before, your true Creator
Alpha and Omega, the Originator
Making but one command before His master plan:
"Love for your fellow man, this you must understand"
"Love for your fellow man, this you must understand"
    Thinkin' just the other day
I just have to say- This is my Father's day
Give Him thanks and praise-this is your Father's day
