1.  Important Words From Our Treasurer...
Money Matters

Last week we were reminded about how advertising sales for our concert program is a major fundraiser for VOICES and the other partners of Affiliated Choruses of Ithaca (ACI). Some of you may wonder why we still have participant fees if we have fundraisers. Here’s the context. The VOICES budget for this semester is $7,835. Of that, $6,020 (77%) pays stipends for our directors and accompanist. $500 is budgeted for new music scores with the rest of our music coming from archives. $350 goes for rental of our rehearsal space, a very modest fee which is part of the reason we perform at the First Unitarian Church each semester. The rest of the expenses, about $900, goes toward concert expenses such as instrumentalists, sound equipment and recording, and printing. Our concert space this semester is donated by First Baptist Church, and our performance there on October 18 is one way we thank them.

On the income side, we budgeted concert ticket sales at $1,800. As of last week, income from your fees totals $1,200 and donations total about $300. The VOICES share of income from program shell ad sales and other ACI fundraisers is budgeted at about $1,000 for the semester. You don’t need a very sharp pencil to see that that leaves us $3,500 short for the semester. Your Steering Committee is pursuing grant support for the spring semester to help offset that shortfall. What happens if we run short? We do have reserve funds on account from some large events in the past that provided significant income. In recent years, we have been lucky that fundraising has exceeded budgeted amounts (sell those ads and tickets!) so we have only had to dip into those reserves very modestly. This year could be another story.

4.  About the Elevator...
From Mark Pederson, UU Administrator

We do not have a firm date on the repair.  Since our elevator is 15+ years old, Otis no longer stocks the part so our service person is on the lookout for used parts to put in.  Otherwise, it will be $2500 to retrofit the elevator with a brand-new part designed for a more modern elevator.  With all the funds we’ve expended on the Annex recently, we have to find ways to reduce.  Since it is functional (slow, yes) and still safe, we have decided to see how to do this economically.

Thanks for your understanding.

5.  Ad Sales...
Sale of Ads for ACI Program Shell

Welcome to the 2017 – 18 season of VOICES, and to a new season of selling ads for the ACI program shell.  Chorus members from last year will remember that we made over $10,000 through this important fund raising effort, with members of the three groups selling ads to over seventy businesses.

We need everyone’s help again this year, with a deadline of Friday, October 20 for completing the process.  You can download the forms you need from this newsletter (“Advertiser’s Agreement,” “Introductory Letter for Advertisers,” and “Instructions for Sale of ACI Ads”) but you can also pick them up at rehearsal, along with sample program shells from last year.  Cynthia Howell and/or I will be on hand to sign you up for the businesses you want to approach.  You can also email me directly to let me know: kkg1@cornell.edu.

The more people who participate in this process, the more money we make. And there are some other carrots:  a high rate of participation can once again win your director, Lorrene, a gift certificate to Hickey’s.  In addition, individuals who sell ads to the most businesses or who make the most money will also receive gift certificates—nice ones!

Please do start thinking about businesses that would welcome a chance to show their support of ACI choruses.  Remember: no business will buy an ad unless it is asked to do so.  Who can you ask?  Reach out!

Contact me if you have questions, or if you want to let me know by email what business(es) you will approach.

Many thanks!
