Romans 8:38-39 I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

JESUS LIVES! HIS LOVE HOLDS US SECURELY

We live in a sin-shattered world. Sin threatens us from without, for the world is basically hostile toward those who trust in Christ and live as His people. But sin also attacks us from within. Every Christian must deal with the fact that his own sinful flesh is a traitor lurking within. It is not surprising that we must go through many tribulations to enter the kingdom of God (Acts 14:22).

But we do not walk alone. Jesus lives! Our Lord is intimately familiar with the pain and sorrow and temptations of our earthly lot. He has promised to be with us, to strengthen and uphold us every step of the way. We can depend on this, since not even death can come between us and Him. In fact, Jesus' resurrection victory over the grave demonstrates that that the love with which He upholds us is stronger than sin and death, Satan and hell. We may be weak and vulnerable as sheep but the risen Savior is our Shepherd! He has promised, "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand" (John 10:27-28).

Jesus lives! I know full well
Naught from me His love shall sever;
Life nor death nor powers of hell
Part me now from Christ forever.
God will be a sure Defense;
This shall be my confidence.
(The Lutheran Hymnal, 201:4)
