Amos 6:5 You strum away on your harps like David and improvise on musical instruments.

SING TO THE LORD A NEW SONG

Our youngest daughter is not quite two years old. When she gets excited with her toys, she sometimes begins to run through the house. As she runs, she is completely oblivious to the dangers that surround her. Mom and Dad breathe in sharply as she races across the kitchen floor nearly hitting the corner of the table with her head or just missing falling on the books and papers she dropped on the floor a few minutes earlier.

In Israel and Judah, the people were running headlong into spiritual danger with their careless lifestyles. They were so busy playing with their toys (like their wealth and power), that they had no idea they were so close to disaster. They happily strummed their harps and played their music as if nothing were wrong.

The songs that Amos heard were not music to his ears or to the ears of God, for the music called to attention the fact that the people had ignored their sin and turned away from the Savior. We ask God to forgive and strengthen us so that sounds like that don't ever come from us. We ask him to put a "new song" in our hearts. How much more joyful to praise him with our lips and thank him with our mouths! How much more exciting to glorify Him for His great goodness in Christ Jesus!
