Matthew 6:9-11 After this manner, therefore, pray: "Our Father which art in heaven ... Give us this day our daily bread ..."

WHY PRAY FOR DAILY BREAD?

Our heavenly Father promises to provide what we need to live on during the time of our sojourn in this world. He promises to do this even without our asking Him for anything and despite our not deserving anything. Why, then, does Jesus instruct us to pray for our daily bread? For at least two reasons, both rooted in His love:

First, by teaching us to petition our Father for daily bread, Jesus reminds us in an ongoing, everyday way: "All the good things you enjoy in your life from day to day are gifts of your Father's goodness. He it is who blesses you with the ability to learn a skill, hold down a job, 'bring home the bacon.' This isn't something you could accomplish by your own power and ingenuity. See, what a benevolent Father you have! Serve Him in love with a grateful heart and praise Him every day!"

Second, by teaching us to request daily bread from our Father, Jesus provides the assurance: "He isn't going to provide for you on a hit or miss basis, now and then, once in a while. He'll do it 24/7, all 365 days of the year. Therefore, you need not worry about your life, what you will eat, what you will drink, what you will wear. If your Father takes care of the least important of His creatures, the birds, He will most assuredly care for you, His beloved child."

Prayer: I give You thanks, gracious heavenly Father, for all the daily blessings You provide for me in Your goodness. Grant that at all times I recognize Your loving-kindness toward me and show my appreciation for all that I receive. Teach me, Father, to be content with what You give me. Lead me to find peace and joy in the assurance of Your daily providential care. In Jesus' name. Amen.
