Perley Curtis (The Artist)
A day in the life of the artist Perley Curtis is as varied and unpredictable as the man is himself.  Perley has never lost sight of the fact that music is supposed to be fun, and even though it can sometimes be a lot of work, he never forgets to take time to enjoy what he is doing.  The fact that he is a multi-talented musician has led to him working as a dobro and steel guitar player with artists like Becky Hobbs, Holly Dunn, Johnny Paycheck and Charlie Louvin and a six year stint with the legandary Loretta Lynn.  He has performed everywhere from his New England homeplace to the Grand Ole Opry stage, on the legendary shows Hee Haw and Austin City Limits, 2 degrees below the Arctic Circle in Canada for an Indian Tribe, all over Europe and for the troops in Guantonimo Bay, Cuba
There is never anything typical about what Perley may be doing in the music business from one week to the next.  He may be in the recording studio adding his touch to a new country artist's next CD, playing steel guitar for a future honky tonk hero out at the Nashville Palace or one of the bars on lower Broadway or just hanging out at the farm with his lovely new bride, Erin Hay.  Perley and Erin currently have a top 15 song in the New Music Weekly Charts with "Making Plans"  and are expecting a child in July 2009.

With the release of some of Perley's music to radio via the Western Heart Compilation, it is evident that radio more than welcomes the traditional country sound that is Perley Curtis.  After listening to Perley, you just know that Wynn Stewart, Hank Snow, Merle Haggard, Buck OwensKeith Whitley and all the other honky tonk heros have a big smile on their face knowing that their type of music is in good hands.
Perley's latest release is a selt-titled, 12 song CD full of traditional country music.  You can find his duet with Erin Hay on it and also the debut of his 18 year old son, Perley Robert Curtis, Jr. , on mandolin.  Please check it out.  You won't be sorry you did.

"click" Bus Photo to read details about leasing

The Tour Bus:  Perley also owns a 1987 Silver Eagle bus that he not only uses for his own career, but leases to other artists from time to time.  Some of the artists that have leased it over the years include Charlie Louvin, Doug Stone, Pirates of the Mississippi, Tommy Cash  & T. Graham Brown.  If you would like more information about leasing it, click on the bus photo for more info.  Perley recently took the bus up to New England where he did shows in Maine, Massachusettes and New Hampshire.   Perley is currently working on putting together a bluegrass group and has plans of hitting the road on the bus with his son after he graduates.

The 1956 Ford Victoria - Perley gets his love of 50's cars from his Dad.   In fact, Perley's first car at age 15 was an old beat up 1956 Ford.  Over the years, he has owned and refurbished over a dozen old Fords, including his current 1956 Ford Fairlane Victoria 2 Door Hard Top.   His next quest is a 1956 Crown Victoria.  If you see a good deal, let him know!

Lonnie Ratliff ~ Record Production~ 5 Songs

1. Cost for 5 songs is $3,750 (Three Thousand Seven Hundred & Fifty Dollars). This includes Studio, Musicians, Etc! and you end up with a mixed CD of your project. There are not a lot of hidden costs that will be tacked on. The only additional costs I can think of would be $150 if you want us to Master it for you before it goes to your pressing plant. (Call me and I can explain Mastering to you) The other thing that could cost you later is that you might have to pay songwriter royalties if you have recorded someone elses songs and are gonna include it on your CD to sell. (Example = If you want to record a George Strait song or a Taylor Swift song then you will have to pay a royalty to use that song) I can help point you in the right direction to obtain a license from the Harry Fox Agency.

2. For those artist who are new at this, Production is just about getting your songs recorded and ready to be made into CD's that you can sell. I don't press up the 500 or 1000 CD's for you but I can recommend Karen Bruno at Amazon Audio who can take care of everything for you. I believe it costs about $1500 for a 1000 CD's. A lot of the artists I produce will cut a couple of 5 song sessions with me and then put them together and press up a CD they can sell and get their money back.

3. First thing we need to do is figure out if we can work together and come up with something we can both be proud of. You can listen to the artists I have produced (Click Here) and get an idea of what I do. If you are a decent singer and I believe we can make a respectable recording then I will probably be glad to work with you.

4. Deposits & Payments: The first thing required is a $200 deposit and once that is paid we can start putting together your session. I will help you find the songs if needed and will arrange them for you using any ideas you may have. Once we find the songs and have picked a date you send me the balance of $3,550 at least 2 weeks before the session date and I book your session at a studio on Music Row. I normally use Dixiana Studio. We will cut the basic tracks and overdubs there and then cut the final vocals, harmonies and mix at Smokehouse studio.

5. The Band normally will consist of Bass, Drums, Rhythm Guitar, Piano, Steel Guitar, Fiddle, Dobro, Electric Guitar & Mandolin. If I believe a particular song calls for a specialty instrument I will use it and there is no additional charge. I do not try to cut corners by taking short cuts on the musicians we use.

6. Original songs. I have about 200 songs in my Music Publishing Company that you are welcome to use (Royalty Free) if you are using them on any project I produce.

7. Time it will take to record. Figure that it will take about 3 days in the studio. If you are on a tight schedule you're part will be over in two days. First day we cut the tracks with a scratch vocal and the second day you will sing your final vocals. I figure you will have up to 45 minutes to sing each song.

8. Practice Guitar tracks if needed. If you think you may have trouble singing any of the songs you pick and do not play an instrument I can record and send you an acoustic guitar track of the song so you can practice it before you come to Nashville.

9. Final thoughts. Keep in mind that you are hiring me to make you sound good and I take my job very seriously. I will do my best to see that you have a good time in the studio. I work with some of the best studio musicians in Nashville and they will do everything in their power to make the best recording of your music as possible. Feel free to E Mail any of the artists I have worked with (Click Here) before and ask them any questions you may have about working with me. Once you have paid your deposit I am on your team and you can call (615) 742 0666 and ask me any questions you have and I will try my best to give you an answer. Probably half of the artist I work with are recording their first CD and have a lot of questions so don't be embarrassed to ask about anything you don't understand.

I look forward to working with you and hope I can be a part of your musical future.

NOTE from Lonnie - I always feel a little guilty because I never have time to listen to mp3's new artists and songwriters send me, unsolicited I might add.  I hate it but I just delete them because I finally figured out I could try to be a nice guy or I could try to work and pay my bills.  My banker had a very stern suggestion that I needed to keep working and be a nice guy on my own time after all my bills were paid.  Turns out that spare time does not exist so I just had to give up on listening to unsolicited mp3's, CD's and giving my opinions and suggestions.  Now I just concentrate on my music business out of necessity but I figure I can give you some links that will answer your questions better than I could anyway.

Do these 7,035 people in the country music business know about you ?

How many times have you said to yourself "If the right people knew about me and what I am doing I bet I could get signed to a record deal or maybe get one of my songs recorded by someone"
Nashville is full of stories of how artists and songwriters have lost thousands of dollars trying to find a shortcut into the business.  There ain't no easy answers but there are a lot cheaper ways to get your name out there.  Here is a way you can at least let people in the business know you are trying.m  Just write a simple update about yourself and what you are doing and I will include it in the next Newsletter I send out.  Now that alone will probably not be the answer to all your dreams of stardom but I can guarantee it will do you more good than sitting on the couch watching Oprah and wishing.  And it COSTS YOU NOTHING.
All you need to do is to put some thought into it and realize that 7,035 people in the music business are going to be reading it.  If it looks boring no one will remember it and you are back to watching TV and wishing.  If it stands out from the crowd a little bit a few people will probably "click" on your website URL and go check you out a little closer.  You don't have to write like John Steinbeck or Mark Twain you just have to make your half a dozen sentences more interesting than the rest of the artists that submit an Update for the Newsletter. You can do this every issue and never spend a dime.  Remember it is real easy to make your Update so lackluster no one will read it but that kind of defeats the purpose.  Spend a few minutes working on it.    You may not have thousands of dollars to spend on hiring a promotion firm but you have access to a lot of people in the music business who could help you out.  It is up  to you if you take advantage or not.

To submit your Artist Update send to E Mail below (Don't Hit Reply)

Include you website URL if you want me to include it

Also, I have joined the scrolling ranks of The Nashville Message Boards. With one song featured on each Board. This is a neat, inexpensive way, for Artists/Labels to get their fare noticed. The Boards scroll 24/7 and you can make some pretty "neat" contacts using this modestly priced service as offered by: Nashville Producer: Lonnie Ratliff. I heartily endorse this service.

Jayme Lynn Scott
On January 31, 2009 I was one of the back-up singers for Country Recording Artist Trent Willmon during a Live DVD taping of his concert at Gilley's, in Dallas, Texas. This was a great experience for me and I really appreciated the opportunity plus it was a lot of fun. He had a large crowd and the people seem to be really enjoying themselves. Hope to do more things like this in the future.

Something Lurking Down South

Ripley Road stayed hidden in a place they call "the barn", for six months,  honing their skills that is now setting South Alabama and North Florida on it's heels.  Ripley Road has the complete package, and local venues are taking notice.  "We have been very fortunate considering the economic state, we have even lowered our salary for club owners just so people can afford to come out and support us" The country music fans or as Ripley Road calls them (D.O.T) are growing weekly.  Ripley Road's new original, written by the band is titled "Woman on a Mission"  Talk about bringing the slide in on a Fender Strat, this song is rocking the bars and clubs every weekend.  The band is looking for a promoter to help pull them from the deep south of Enterprise, AL and introduce them to Nashville.  This is the one band with a name you want forget and a sound you can't get enough of. For booking information and band biography please visit www.myspace.com/ripleyroad

Hi everyone,
Ed Bentley here... First of all, I would like to thank Lonnie for this opportunity to speak with you.. I have just written and recorded a new song called, "Who was that Old Man".. I NEED YOUR HELP HERE!!!  It is an unusual song for the country market, a story about an old man who shows up in a small town looking for work. Pretty soon miricles start to happenaround the old man, people's lives are changed, then suddenly he disappears, leaving town folks saying, "Who was that Old Man??
Here's where you come in. I would like you to listen and send your feedback, IE: How to market it, what would be a good marketing approach, even what artist I might pitch it to, etc.. Or even if you hate this song (hope not-lol) your feedback would be much appreciated!!! I know this is an unusual request, but I would really like to hear your comments. You can
hear my song at www.edbentleymusic.com  You can email me at

Hope all of you have a wonderful and prosperous New Year,
All the best,
Ed

The movie, "Like Dandelion Dust" in which the Younger-Hail-Grant song "What I Wouldn't Give" appears was voted best of festival at the Palm Springs Film Festival. Now the movie is going to appear in at least 4 more major festivals, including Aspen, and you'll be able to see it in theaters beginning February 28th...which just happens to be my (Dave's) birthday!
Hank Grant continues to rake in the online awards, just having been voted Famecast Artist of the Week..he's already won the Stereoframe contest. He's getting some major label interest and we're all pullin' for him.
We recently got some cuts on Kayna's (Hernandez) first album. Our song "Porch Swing" came out right nice!
Younger and Hail are still working on new material while Hail keeps busy with his real estate business and Younger keeps working with kids with learning disabilities.
Thanks Lonnie!

G'day to all,

Since the split up of my multi-award winning county band 'Sovereign', I have forged a solo career. First releasing a single called "Girls on Horses" which claimed a great deal of radio air time at home in Australia. My debut solo album "The Battler" picked up 'Album of the Year Award' in 2008 in  Australias Peoples Choice Awards. My song "When a Cowboy Gets the Blues" is still gathering momentum on radio globally. Now in 2009 I'm putting the final touches on my newest album and I've set April 25th as my Austrlain release date. The first track to be lifted from the album is a fun, Aussie summer song called "This is the Life". As with my previous album, all the songs are my own composition. Please come and say G'day on my website www.steveeales.com

many thanks

Steve

G'day and greetings from Down Under!

Merilyn Steele here from Sydney Australia, I've just returned from our country's biggest country music festival here, Tamworth CM Festival. This year one of my songs was nominated as a finalist for a 'Salute Award' in the Childrens Song of the Year category.

Although I missed out on the award (boo hoo) it was so thrilling and nerve wracking to sit in an auditorium full of people and have your name and song read out and the song played amidst the other talented songwriters I was up against. Woo hoo!

It was great also to be part of the street Cavalcade on the Tamworth Songwriters Assn float down the main street of Tamworth.

My new single is out for Feb - 'Information Blues'. Check it out on my website!

If you haven't already heard Johnny won the whole thing!!! He now has the title of "Best New Act in Country Music" Johnny left for Nashville on Monday the 12th after performing at Cowboys for the 3rd Annual Country Jam. This year having combined the Jam with the HOG (Harley Owner Group's) "Riding Home" Poker Run they were able to raise over $35,000. Johnny arrived in Nashville and had the best week of his life. He rehearsed for the Colgate Country Showdown in the Ryman Auditorium and could feel the enormous honor as he stood on the stage where so many great artists have stood. When he called home he was happy at that moment having stood on THAT stage, and that was just the rehearsal. When he took to the stage the night of the finals Johnny looked at ease as he performed his two originals "What Happens Here Stays Here" and "How Could I Not" after he finished Leann Rimes told Johnny he did a great job and she liked his songs. When all the contestants finished they came out and did a medley of songs that Charlie McCoy was instrumentally a part of and Johnny sang a verse of "He Stopped Loving Her Today." When Johnny's name was called as the winner and he accepted the award with "I want to thank my granny for putting the first guitar in my hands," I don't remember much after that. I do recall hearing all of the people behind me gasp and then what I assume was tears of joy. This meant so much to our family having lost Granny in May to a car accident. I know she had the best seat in the house. We are so proud of Johnny and what he has accomplished to this point. Since that night in Nashville things have just been moving forward in such a great way. Thank you to the 140 people that drove from Alabama, Georgia, Michigan and Florida. And all of you from Tennessee that picked up your tickets there. When I looked around I felt like we were home with so many people that made a road trip to Music City to be a part of that moment. Thank you again for all of your support in Johnny’s journey,

Rhonda

Mike Headrick

"Hi, Folks.

I've learned over the years that Pedal Steel Guitar is an instrument that touches and brings pleasure to a lot of people. I play several instruments, but the Steel Guitar has surfaced as the instrument of choice. I began recording Steel Guitar instrumental CDs in 1999. Since then, I have recorded a total of Twelve at present, with another on schedule for release in March. I stick mainly to traditional country, but also have a two West Coast Country Rock CDs (Eagles, etc.), and a couple of Gospel CDs.....all instrumental. They do of course, have all the other instruments on them that a good recording requires. Lonnie Ratliff handles some of my earlier CDs on his CDBaby store, and when you can buy them from Lonnie, please do. Other CDs and steel guitar products can be found at my web sites. You'll also find sound samples to listen to.

I invite you to check out what I do at www.MikeHeadrick.com and www.CountryDiscovery.com

Thanks in advance for your interest, and I hope you enjoy looking around.

THE WINDOW

The writer sits by the open window in his comfortable room,
his feet propped up on the sill.
He holds a yellow legal pad and a felt tipped pen.
This is what he writes:

"Twilight in the afternoon.
Only two o'clock, but looking more like seven.
Cold front moving in.
Big soft raindrops begin slapping down random leaves
on the bush that leans against the window.
The tempo of the rain picks up.
The local blue jays complain hoarsely.
Or maybe they think they're singing.

"Now the breeze turns to wind,
and the trees are thrashing around.
It begins to rain on your feet.
Feeling rugged and outdoorsy, you defy the elements.
The feet stay!
Suddenly, unexpected lightning, and then thunder.
Wow! The feet come down.

"Rain splotches appear on your writing paper,
and the blowing curtains drape over your head,
creating a Mona Lisa effect.
>From somewhere across the lake, a train whistle.
A sound often described as "lonesome", but more like "unrestful".
A moving sound, a signal to the wanderer inside us.

"You turn on the lamp and security fills the room.
The sky and lake are a lighter gray now.
You reopen the window.
The rain is letting up, mostly just the eaves dripping.
A squirrel checking out the wet garage roof.
The air smells different now:
Washed vegetation, damp wood, supper cooking.
And it's colder.

"The feet return to the windowsill in fuzzy socks from the bottom of the drawer.
A rainstorm is not bad from the inside, looking out.
You recall other dark stormy days, in bleak, hopeless places.
You were alone, cold, and it was no fun."

(That is all he puts on paper because his eyes are closed.
He dozes off.)

The cop says "Come on. You can't sleep here".
He's lying on cement, covered with a large piece of cardboard.
He opens his eyes and sees the inside of a parking garage.
There are oil spots in the empty parking spaces.
It's chilly.
He says: "What the hell?"

The cop nudges him with his nightstick. "Come on, buddy. Let's go."
He struggles to his feet, aching all over.
"I gotta get home", he says. "My wife's cooking supper."
The policeman says "Uh-huh".

Out on the pavement he tries to get his bearings.
The street is lined with old warehouses and dirty brick buildings.
Unfamiliar.
Some of the second story windows have old shades,
or shreds of curtain, as though somebody once lived there.
The sky is clouded over gray. No telling what time it is.
It looks like rain.

He picks a direction at random and starts walking,
collar turned up against the wind,
hands deep in his pockets in search of warmth.
A paper cup blows along the gutter.
He thinks about the dream he had before the cop woke him up.
Something about a warm house, and the smell of dinner cooking.

He feels for a wallet, knowing it wouldn't be there.
There is some change in his pocket, and a half-smoked cigarette.
By long habit, he's looking for the edge of the city,
so he can hitch a ride to a smaller town where help is easier to get.
Big cities don't care.

He's almost across the city when the rain starts and the chill sets in.
He spends some of his change on coffee at a Burger King,
and is now entering the suburbs.

The storm comes up fast and he ducks into a doorway.
Lightning, and then thunder, almost at once. That was close!
Now he's cold and wet.
He's not going to make it out of town tonight.
He's got to find a place to get out of the weather.

He leaves the doorway and turns down a tree lined side street,
with a small lake on the left, and sturdy old houses on the right.
Lights are on in some of the windows.
It must be nice.
Across the lake he sees some boathouses that might help him get dry.
This street probably goes right around there.

He sees a house that looks strangely familiar.
Maybe a look-alike from his mostly forgotten past.
Now he sees the first person he's really looked at all day.
There's a guy in an open window with his feet up on the sill,
in this weather! He must be nuts!
It's been raining on his feet, and he's sound asleep!
The curtains have blown up around his head like some kind of a bandanna.
He turns and walks away, shaking his head at the stupidity,

On a day like this, if you have a window,
you should close it.

Are you sitting on a "Hit Song" ?

I have decided there is just too much good country music out there that the public never gets to hear and the main reason is the lack of money or the knowledge of how to get it into the right hands.  I honestly believe if you have a hit song that nowdays you do not need a big music machine behind you.  All that matters is if the public likes your song or not.  With that in mind I have set up my online music company to where I believe you can have a decent shot at finding out for $150.  Now keep in mind that there is a real good chance that the song you and your girlfriend or boyfriend and your close friends and family think is the next big thing may end up disappointing you.  In the past it would have cost you several thousand dollars to find this out.  It will still cost you that much if you are naive enough to give someone the money.

I have been promoting country music since 1978 so I do have a reasonale understanding of what I am doing and I believe I will probably get more work than I can handle soon and then be able to raise my prices from this ridiculously low $150.

This is what you get with the package.  I will E Mail an mp3 of your song to 550+ Internet and AM & FM radio stations that I have contacted who agreed to accept mp3's.

I will build you a YouTube SlideShow (similar to the one below) and include a link so the DJ's can watch it if they choose to.

I will furnish a LINK to wherever you have your song for sell at (CDBABY - I-Tunes - AMAZON.com - Your Website) or your E Mail if you want the DJ's to contact you.

I will forward any comments about your song that I get from the DJ's to you and keep an eye on the Playlist Boards to see who is playing you.

I will TRACK your song for 5 weeks so it is only costing you $30 a week to find out if you have a hit or not.

Keep in mind that I will not be calling the DJ's and begging them to play your song.  I only make it available to them and they can choose to play it or not.  I have a reputation of only working good songs so they will at least give it a listen so you have got a shot.  After that it is up to the song.  If you want someone to call them and promote your song I can get you set up with a promoter for about $3500 for 6 weeks but I have no interest in doing that type of promotion myself.

All I will need from you is an mp3 of the song (I will pass on anything I don't want my name associated with) 2 or 3 PHOTOS of you for the YouTube (.jpg)  The links to your website and where you are selling the song if applicable and $150 - I can accept Credit Cards through PayPal.

Attn: DJ's - This is a nice uptempo song from Nova Scotia artist Lynn Chisholm with a nice little sassy attitude that should make your listeners ears perk up.  Song idea is based on the fact that back in the 50's Doctors would recommend that patients with T.B. or any other respiratory disease move to Arizona because the climate there would usually help them to live much longer.  In this song Lynn isn't sick of anything except that rotten man she's leaving behind in California.

Remember to take a second to E mail me back and let me know if you plan on playing it in your shows and I would really appreciate any comments you might have about the artist and/or the song.  Thanks a lot -  Lonnie Ratliff  NashvilleShowcase@comcast.net
